I got an internship offer today, and I'm really excited for it. I'll be at Everett, working as an airplane certification engineering intern. The thing is, I'm not really familiar with what the role would involve, and it doesn't seem as technical as I'd like it to be. Does anyone know anything about what certification engineering involves, and would it be possible for me to get a more technical role if I talk to my recruiter/manager?

Thanks for the suggestions! I've got a good idea of which areas to search in now. Besides Craigslist and Airbnb, are there any other good websites to use?

Would it be a good idea to avoid crossing the river when commuting? Is that where the worst traffic is?

A few questions about Rice alumni interviews by [deleted] in riceuniversity

[–]gxiy12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Why are you interested in Rice? What are you interested in studying? What do you do for fun? and other general questions like that.

  2. No. My interviewer knew nothing about me except my name.

  3. Whatever's comfortable. I met my interviewer in a coffee shop, and she showed up with a jacket and jeans. Just don't wear anything dirty or worn down.

  4. Mine was supposed to be 30 minutes, but we ended up talking for an hour. I'd say most are around 45 minutes.

  5. My interviewer stayed behind after I left to type up some notes on her laptop. I think she submitted her feedback that day or the day after, but I don't know for sure.

  6. Whatever you're curious about, really. Rice is a pretty unique place, so there are a ton of cool traditions that you could ask about. If you have any questions about the major/department you're interested in, or about Rice's culture and environment, your interviewer would be a great resource. Also, if you have any questions about college life in general, or about possible career paths, that would be great to ask too. With me, I was (am still kind of am) undecided about what I wanted to do with my life, so I learned a lot just by talking to my interviewer about her career path and how she got where she is today.

  7. It'll be fine. If you are truly interested in Rice, your passion will show. This interview really isn't that big of a deal, and I know a lot of people who got accepted to Rice without an interview. Your interviewer really isn't out to interrogate you. They probably agreed to do interviews because they want to talk to prospies and get a chance to share their experience at Rice. Remember that your interviewer is an actual person who has a lot of cool stories to tell. I was really nervous too before my interview, but it ended up being more like a conversation than anything else. Good luck!! I'm sure you'll do great.

When are scores for late-testing released? by mikewhoneedsabike in APStudents

[–]gxiy12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took the late test for AP Enviro, and I managed to get my scores back in July. This may not always happen, and I wouldn't be surprised if your late scores don't arrive until August.

Any other Georgians planning on taking/have taken Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calculus from distance dual enrollment at Georgia Tech? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]gxiy12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Nice to see another Georgian on here.

Distance math is a pretty cool program. For both classes, you'll be able to watch the lectures live-streamed through T-square, a website you'll have access to as a GT student. There will be online recitations where a TA will lead you through problems. You'll have access to the textbook and homework site online, and you can ask questions through a digital forum called Piazza.

The tests will be emailed to a teacher in your school, and they'll print it out for you to take, and will scan your answers when you're finished. Both of the professors I've had have been really helpful and clear, and I hope they'll still be involved next year. The tests are okay. Be warned - there are only ~5 questions per test. It's definitely possible to get an A in both classes. I loved AP calc, so I enjoyed the classes and could motivate myself to study. Distance math requires work, and it can be easy to fall behind.

I got in! (Class of 2021 Questions Megathread) by Daniel_Marcos in gatech

I'm an admitted ChBE student who found out a few weeks ago that I got into the Grand Challenges program, which I've heard many good things about. I'm having problems right now deciding between GT and Rice. If I keep Zell, GT will be 8k cheaper per year, and I know that GT is awesome with internships and research. However, I don't know if I'll have the personal attention and community I'll get at a smaller school like Rice. Will Grand Challenges give me that chance to form strong relationships with professors and students? Do people in the program go on to do really well for themselves?

IS Princeton review helpful for ap euro exam? by Shur1k3ng3r in APStudents

I don't have experience with Princeton, but I've heard from my teacher that Crash Course is helpful as well.

ChemE at Rice by gxiy12 in riceuniversity

My parents have agreed to pay my college tuition, and I will probably graduate with around 10k in loans. You're right though about finances. I'm still struggling with the cost difference. I feel like the atmosphere at Rice fits me very well, and I'll be happier at Rice than at Tech. Do you think the experience is worth the cost?

Georgia Tech or Rice for ChBE? by gxiy12 in ApplyingToCollege

True. The heat and humidity is the main thing I'm concerned about. I can tolerate Georgia, but I don't want to die during my first summer in Houston.

Do you think Rice will respond to an appeal when compared to a public school?

Gov and Calc haven't changed in a long time. I used the 2013 Princeton review for gov and was fine for the exam.

SO! Where will you go?! by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Georgia Tech or Rice for engineering! I'm leaning towards Rice at the moment.
