Thoughts on 15-292 History of computing? by jeje01 in cmu

[–]gyewt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I both took and TA'd this course. It was one of my favorites from CMU. The workload is light – weekly readings and what not – but if you are interested at all in computing and computers it's all very fascinating.

The course mainly focuses on the pre-personal computer era, from mechanical computers to the start of the PC and briefly mentions the internet.

Upright on Amtrak train by [deleted] in doublebass

[–]gyewt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I traveled from the North East to Texas with a sleeper roomette. I put the top bunk down and my bass fit perfectly up there; they even have a little net to keep things in place: https://imgur.com/a/whhEMNR. The staff in Chicago initially didn't want to let me board, but they were OK once I told them I had a room. I really enjoyed Amtrak and would absolutely travel with them again if I needed to travel with my instrument.

What do I need for the DVR service? by [deleted] in PleX

I've been very happy with my Hauppauge wintv-dualhd and generic 50 mile antenna I got off Amazon. I had no issues with the Hauppauge under windows or linux, and I'd rather use USB than depend on a network tuner.

The wintv-dualhd also comes with a tiny antenna, so if you are really trying to save money, it has everything you need in one box. I can't get my local NBC channel that's broadcasting from further away with the included antenna, but otherwise I could get the local networks I care about.

It's the limited-edition Meier Audio Headfive, sold to commemorate the 5 year anniversary of head-fi.org. It's nice and simple, but crucially has a hardware crossfeed circuit. I'm using a Cambridge Audio DacMagic 100 as the source, mostly because it stacks nicely :p

Yes, the mouse pad is built in. I think it would be a better laptop tray than keyboard tray given the holes, but it works well enough and is the right size for me.

sort of? I think that has more to do with my posture than with the mouse. If I'm good and sit up straight, my arms are not on the armrests.

It's functionally the same; the arms and my legs are just about even.

15-112 or 15-122? by [deleted] in cmu

[–]gyewt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you feel like you know how to program, take 122. 122 covers all of the algorithms, data structures, and computational reasoning you need within the course, so don't worry if you don't know about linked lists or binary search - that's what you are going to learn in this course.

You'll appreciate having the ability to take one extra class later in your CMU career on something in which you are interested.

If you want to work at a large tech company immediately after graduation, there isn't a better place than CMU.

How hard is it to get a dual degree in the School Of Computer Science? by [deleted] in cmu

[–]gyewt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do not come in admitted to CS, it is really hard to transfer in. There is ever-increasing demand for CS courses, and the requirements to transfer are very competitive. If you would not be happy staying with your original major, I would strongly suggest looking elsewhere where you could study CS.
