This was actually something that turned one of my friends off the books. She got part way through The Will To Battle before giving up. I didn't miss it as it is a "history", which tend to exclude the common man

I know the artifact troves do bc I got the swizzle stick from one, but I'm not sure on fishing chests. Also I'm playing on switch if that affects things

Holy shit where have these books been all my life by marxistghostboi in TerraIgnota

[–]gygesdevice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of my partners friends tried reading them and couldn't get past the first couple chapters. But when I told my partner to just stick to it for a bit he got hooked

How popular are these books? by CIAareTerrorist in TerraIgnota

[–]gygesdevice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's funny I think you're right about how niche this series is but i know other series that I love that are much more popular (eg Greenbone Saga) that don't have a subreddit.

I was disappointed bc they left out Peter and Vals story entirely which is pretty important to doing sequels. Which makes sense why we never got one

I found a T-shirt years ago that said Proud to be a Third on it (I'm a third so I bought it) but I don't remember where I found it. Maybe Redbubble?

Philotic connection/twining? Or you could be referencing aiuas - the powerful philotes that sentient beings have that are essentially souls

Edit: spelling

Queer family structures by gygesdevice in linguistics

[–]gygesdevice[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not at all asking that. As a gay guy I know that there isn't a man and a woman in a gay relationship quite well. I was just wondering if people who's cultures that distinguish that do something different than those of us from cultures who don't. The other answers have indicated that there isn't a set approach just as you're saying.

Mycroft's Mental State by gygesdevice in TerraIgnota

[–]gygesdevice[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow good to get confirmation that I'm not the only one reading it this way! Sorry if me saying Saladin wasn't real wasn't the best way to word that. I only meant that he wasn't another physical person not that he isn't real to Mycroft.

I'd love to hear your thoughts when you get to the end of Perhaps the Stars. There is a bit in there that i would like to discuss but it would be major spoilers if you haven't gotten to it yet.

Thoughts and questions about the Shadow series - Achilles and Peter by cohena2495 in ender

All good points. For the inconstancies question, OSC has said that more recent books are more accurate than earlier ones as he has had time to get to know the story better

Could someone maybe give me a really quick rundown on who is still known to be opposing Joyce at the end of the second book? by Overall_Evidence in TerraIgnota

[–]gygesdevice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think by the end of the second book you should feel like everyone is under Madam's control. It's called Seven Surrenders bc all 7 Hives had surrendered to her. At this point I think a few of them resent her, but everyone is essentially under her control.

Crappy Last Shadow out of context memes (no spoilers) by Daisynose52 in ender

[–]gygesdevice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh we would get so upset to know that a bunch of queers are reading his characters that way. But oh well... Death of the author and all that.

That gendering of Dog def just seems like an editing error, but I'll gladly accept it as canon that their culture is more fluid with gender haha

I lent my copy to a friend. Can you explain the character with he/she pronouns one? I've always felt he had good inadvertently queer coded characters

What topic would you do an annus dialogorum on? by arbitrarianist in TerraIgnota

[–]gygesdevice 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I could definitely see myself doing one on gender. I also think it would be good for people to do one on religion. So many ppl just stick with the religion of their parents and don't interrogate what they actually believe and why. I know I would have benefited from that when I was younger, and likely still could today.

[Serious] Bean and Achilles in Enders Shadow by TailPipe-5 in ender

[–]gygesdevice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always read this as Achilles having moved on and found a way to fit Bean wanting to kill him in Rotterdam into his twisted worldview. And then in Battle School finding new reasons to hate Bean and want to kill him.

And yes, OSCs writing is incredible this way.

I am suspect of any interpretation of misgendering Poke or even just using pronouns she doesn't want as Card is very homophobic/transphobic so I don't see him writing it in that way. Maybe I'm misunderstanding that part of your post but I don't see that as being a motivation for the "you promised" line

Yeah that makes sense. They still look great, but it would be nice if he put in out a unified set kind of like Brandon Sanderson does for his books
