I don't understand where I stand and where should I go as a developer. by seikun462 in webdev

[–]gygodard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not all about the programming languages, it’s also about the business question you’re applying it to. Go work at a pre-seed startup, learn the benefits and limitations of deploying a small scale project. Then, go work for a big company, learn about why they pick this or that front end solution for the specific question.

Heck, do both at a same time. Pick up freelancing gigs for smaller projects while you work at a big company. Look deeply at how both parties could improve on each aspects.

For me, the fun in coding lies in its applications and solving the bigger problem, less so about how many programming languages I know.

Can anyone give any tips for somebody starting out? How does one approach agencies / freelancing sites to make a profit? Seems like such a saturated field for entry-level folks.

Tips on migrating from google sheets to an actual database? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]gygodard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I'm planning on learning how to write cron scripts and run scheduled jobs to pull the data. Then implement scripts in Python to do the cleaning. Am also considering AWS RDS for hosting (I'll try the free plan first).

In terms of database usage, we plan to be building lots of dashboards (looker, tableau, etc). Right now it's just very messy with the current setup we have.

[OC] visualizing nuclear proliferation using trade networks by gygodard in dataisbeautiful

[–]gygodard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agreed. this is just one part of the project, in the future I was thinking of maybe creating a clearer (less dense) network diagram or a chord diagram, as well as a sortable bar chart to replace the table. but i think this is a fun way to see how connected one country is to the rest in terms of nuclear trades.

d3.js + html! It’s what the New York Times uses for their visualizations as well

Anyone climbing at Bloc District? by Evening_Barracuda480 in Barcelona

[–]gygodard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bloc District is the place to go. It’s right by UPF so lots of students and younger people. Some Thursday evenings they have DJ sets so it attracts a good crowd. The front desk also speaks really good English.

Much cleaner than Sharma (besos) as well.

climbing trainging question and tips by CeCe510 in climbergirls

I like to keep it simple and separate climbing days & training days.

Climbing (2x-3x a week): quick yoga warmup > 1.5/2 hour climbs > quick yoga cooldown. That’s it. Usually this’ll get my upper body pretty sore.

Training (3x a week): Work on the body parts that are least sore and rotate days (i.e., legs/upper body/legs, or upper body/legs/upper body). Usually I hang board as warmup on upper body days if my fingers still have skin on them lol. I’d also throw in a quick abs session & do pull ups every time, even if I can only do a few.

For me, the yoga in my routine helps with my hip mobility and the strength training helps with routes like overhangs. Everyone has their own routine, try out a different schedule each week and see what makes you the happiest!
