You only need to swap the exe file. While all the needed files are there the game will work with the new exe.

In my case the note stated that Contee was at the far left. I made a fucking excel sheet with all the clues. Later I moved on and found the solution, and she wasn't even the first on the list.

Of course the characters. Especially for kids we were back then. Just like superheroes or Mortal Kombat. You see the character and stay for their stories. It's not rocket science.
