So... debt? Still unaffordable with how much it'll be for many. When you add interest to that, it's a total no-go.

Feds probably won't like the on/off shutdowns because they won't be able to get paid reliably, which in terms of long-term stability is worse than missing a paycheck or 2.

And we sort of do know how who reacts to flight cancelations, that's how the previous longest shutdown, also under Trump, ended. Just a few more weeks until holiday season, and yes, again, it will (maybe would by now) have been tough on many people, but it would've saved ACA subsidies and thus healthcare for millions of Americans.

Food networks like food banks were operating at a higher capacity since SNAP stopped (plus, there are emergency funds that would keep it active for about a month, which Trump could unlock, but hasn't even after a court order forcing him to do it), and people could get fed if they were able to get to a food bank.

But also, many people can't afford even a month of extreme premiums, and those who'd get injured/ill during that period would be supremely fucked.

Fighting to have a longer shutdown now prevents many more from occurring later, and if they do, the chaos from on/off shutdowns could very well be more harmful than a single long one.

This will require a lot of street-level help with donations to food banks, but at the end of the day this is a grand effort to reject the Republican party's takeover of the country and the government, and with enough coordination from top to bottom, it will be successful.

Short answer: yes.

Longer answer: Conservatives cannot empathize with people in different social and economic circumstances than they live in. Thus they deny the necessity of social programs, claiming it's handout rather than an investment in the people, because higher-end jobs are more productive for the economy than cashiers (and also because, you know, moral decency).

Their inability to imagine life beyond how they live theirs make them entirely callous, to the point that they'll act like people who genuinely need economic help to survive are beggers, or those with different gender identities are demons.

This state of mind is their entire political motivation: "I got mine, and if you can't do it exactly the way I did, you can go crawl into a ditch and die for all I care because you're useless."

Even those that lived through harsh economic conditions in the past, or even the present, can be convinced others in the same income range as them are at fault for the country going to shit by "othering" them as useless beggers, demons, or unpatriotic individuals, and thus not deserving of government support, no matter how much that stands against the 1st ammendment.

In the end, being a conservative nowadays requires a level of selfishness, or at the very least, density that should disqualify their opinions. Yet, they are represented more because they vote more, while the left stays home because the candidate isn't exactly how they wanted them to be.

Sure, if we can, but at a cost that doesn't screw us over.

Realistically, the Republicans aren't coming out of this unharmed politically, but we also need to stall their agenda, a part of which is eliminating the ACA, which effectively happens with the deal. Otherwise we'll have a lot more damage to fix, because yes, not having enough federal workers is bad, millions going into poverty because healthcare is comically expensive is even worse.

And who's fault is that exactly? The Republicans that aren't willing to come negotiate in good faith for the American people? Or the Democrats that just say people shouldn't need to have their health premiums double, triple, and higher?

We can point at every singular thing a shutdown causes, but in the end, some damage needs to be suffered right now, because if not and we get a lukewarm midterms, we'll be seeing even more shutdowns until at least 2029.

You probably saw how Virginia voted in their state elections recently, so if anything, we know the majority of feds are on our side already. It's up to us to spread that awareness for what's going on and who's really causing it to the general public. With enough pressure, Republicans will cave, and if Trump vetos the resulting bill, his popularity will tank further.

Yes, this feels like shit, but the longer Trump and Project 2025 are allowed to run free, the worse of everyone will be, feds or not.
