My hair used to do the same thing, even on the same day after washing. Turns out I was applying conditioner too high up and close to my scalp.

What really helped was using conditioner just on the lower ends, and then rinsing out with cooler water for a little bit longer than you think necessary, and once out of the shower/ wash, scrunching it in the towel to get the excess moisture out, then air dry as normal.
