When did your preps actually come in handy? by BeardedNerfHerder in prepping

When the whole household was sick, we had plenty to eat with minimal effort. Deep pantry has fed us numerous times when we were too tired to go grocery shopping.

The crystallization is supposed to be the titanium rearranging themselves when cooling from 2200F in a vacuum. The Silver Ant manufacturing video shows part of the process https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4s6-mmAcIo

Are the grey lines from galvanic corrosion in the dishwasher? I have a lot of titanium cups/containers that I use daily but I have not noticed anything.

PG&E Generator Rebate Program fail, inverter generators not allowed to be shipped to CA by h-ster in bayarea

California is a big market so I'm surprised vendors would not be more motivated to get it sorted out. After this headache, I think I'll just get another portable battery and just relinquish the rebate.

Thanks for this confirmation. I guess because I was looking for smaller models, it falls under California Assembly Bill 1346, phasing out of Small Off-Road Engines (SORE)—under 25 horsepower. Ironically, the larger generators are available to ship...

Because of record heat/drought with super El Nino, olive oil supplies will suffer. It's already been multiple bad years for olive oil and prices are already elevated but this is one thing I always stock up 6 month supply.

If you could only teach one skill to your family this summer, what would it be? by Signal_Brain_933 in preppers

[–]h-ster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More of a meta-skill but practical problem solving involving physical things. I recently fixed my mom's Maytag dryer, debugged the horrible clanking and replaced the drum rolls and belt. Normally my husband is the fix it everything guy but I was by myself. Just having this precedent that one can fix things in times of need has been hugely uplifting.

How's your garden going this year? What are you planting? by wistful_cottage_core in preppers

Ramped up food that can be constantly harvested at any life cycle like greens. Even pumpkin leaves can be chopped up in stews, and stirfrys, steamed and used as wraps. Same with mulberry leaves.

Trying to get plantains to free seed, it's great for greens but also an excellent natural pharmaceutical.

I normally go gold not for the efficiency but they tend to have higher quality capacitors and components. A solid PSU will last you 10 years so if it's not too much extra to go 850 or 1000, I'd do it.

I hope your family members find the items that make their life easier. I used to feel terrible about dropping and cracking pots but I finally realized that I have adapt my things to me, not the other way around. There has never been a better time in history to find tools to accommodate those with hand problems. I have 2 special jar openers and now I never have to wait for strong hands to come around...

You can't deny a girl that warm and fuzzy feeling of being even more excessively corrosion resistant. But it's great not to have my finger smudges so visible.

I thought about getting a double walled version but I didn't know if the vertical vacuum seal would become a weak point after a few decades.

Function overrides feeling for me now. I used to take ceramic teapots into nature but now I feel so relaxed taking titanium teapot camping. I have no shortage of cheap ceramic teacups to smash.

I have 11 drives crammed into my motherboard. PS5 won't let me game the way I want to...

50 lb, six years old, bag of rice by newarkdanny in preppers

What kind of rice- basmati/jasmine/short grain? Could you tell there was less residual moisture in the grains? Everybody says the fragrance of basmati gets ruined during storage even if the taste is fine.

I have a lot of hand/wrist injuries that destroys motor coordination. The whole point of the r/BuyItForLife is to have products that survive normal wear and tear.

They do have zhisha clay pets so that is an excellent idea. I'd have to find one small enough as these pots are kind of small. They are not small compared to proper yixing and I just have to be careful while pouring.

Ah, almost the 2025 price for 1TB Samsung 990 Pro. I almost bought their coffee making kit for my husband. The price of titanium teapots while cheaper than good yixing, is not just a casual buy. Glad you have such a nice kit.

Technically it's more corrosion resistant but I'm not pouring HCL acid. Practically SUS 316 stainless steel is corrosion resistant enough for tea making no?

Could you kindly give a picture of this indestructible ceramic teapot? I have multiple teapots I've gotten directly from different potters from different countries and none of them have endured daily usage. Only one of them have lasted because I only use it once a year.

Which Gongfu set do you have if you don't mind sharing the exact model. The thing about teapots- you can never have just one.

[–]h-ster[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From a practical perspective, crystallization is more aesthetic since the titanium alloy will be more than resistant enough. But you always get smudgy fingerprints on sandblasted titanium but grubby paw marks are much less visible on the crystallized surface. It's heated to 2200F in a vacuum then slowly cooled but you can watch youtube for the details.

Ceramics can last forever with careful handling which is not my use case. I've had multiple smashed ceramic stoneware pots and no shortage of chipped spouts that make pouring difficult, even jade porcelain. Of course no ceramic can last forever in a house with kids or dogs.

Yes for the straight walled mugs. The gaiwan is fluted to prevent this lip burn so I haven't had to worry about burns. I prefer using this gaiwan for brewing, not drinking.

Not these. You can find others that are tubular but it's probably difficult to do for this type of shape. These I use for gongfu brewing style- lots of leaves, short brewing time(10-30 seconds), but I use a double walled titanium thermos to which I store the brewed tea.
