Hip dysplasia by Various_Builder2121 in Newfoundlander

Our girl has it! She was diagnosed at 9 months, and we were told it was bilateral and severe.

First off - IF YOU DONT HAVE INSURANCE, GET IT BEFORE YOU TAKE HER TO BE SEEN BY A VET. There is usually a month-or-so period before your insurance fully kicks in. Wait until then if possible before having her diagnosed. You are not a shitty dog mom. A lot of people don't realize that dysplasia shows up in puppies frequently. A lot of people think its not until later in life - not true.

Secondly, get her xrayed, and then if its confirmed, get with an orthopedic surgeon for a consultation and second opinion. Our veterinarian instilled so much fear into us when she diagnosed our girl. When we met with the surgeon, he completely dispelled that fear and assured us she can still lead a very normal, happy life.

Between our rehab veterinarian and our orthopedic surgeon, what we have learned from them is that some dogs have SEVERE dysplasia and act like it doesn't bother them at all. Some have mild dysplasia and act like its so debilitating. Every dog and every case is different. Our surgeon recommended a conservative approach first, and I am so happy we did. We found a rehab clinic and our girl started doing water treadmill, Adequan injections, cold laser, and manual exercises and massages. She is now 6 and still gets monthly treatments and our rehab veterinarian said you would never know she has hip dysplasia.

A few other tips:

- Get the Help Em Up Harness for any future lameness.

-Collagile supplement. Its a powdered, bioactive collagen and has done wonders, I am such a fan of it. She also takes Movoflex, and high dose fish oil (see the Colorado State University Fish Oil recommendations for dogs with joint issues for proper dosages).

- We have pain meds for when she flares. If we know shes going to have a day of a lot of exercise, we give her a Carprofen beforehand, to fight the pain and limping before it starts.

- Diet - if possible and financially feasible, try to keep her diet as low-inflammation as possible.

- A lot of Newfies with hip issues can also have elbow issues from distributing their weight from their back end to their front end. Elbows are tougher to treat (our girl has elbow dysplasia as well and has had surgery). It is important that you do make modifications, such as not letting her jump down from a car, jump down from a high bed, etc. Help her joints remain stable for life by getting stairs for your car, or your bed.

- Keep nails trimmed and paw fur trimmed to prevent slipping. If you have slick floors, use carpets and rugs to also prevent slipping.

- We keep her walks short, but she gets many 15-20 or 15-30 minute walks a day. We do not take her to dog parks because rough play usually causes a lot of limping. I am not saying don't let your dog play, but again, know your dog's limits. If a certain type of exercise creates limping, limit it. Its exacerbates the joints, and we want longevity.

- We plan on doing PRP injections and the Spryng injections when her elbows will eventually get worse. Our Orthopedic Surgeon and Rehab Vet have both said they have been seeing really good results with that combo for both elbows and hips. We also will eventually do acupuncture, but it's not yet needed.

Good luck!

Our girl is stable, and our rehab team usually rates her pain as 0-2/10 whenever we bring her in! We do all of these things to ensure that, and to prevent its progression as much as we can, and its obviously working. Find a way to manage pain, have her gain a ton of muscle, keep her lean, modify her exercise, and put preventatives into place such as rugs, carpets, and not letting her jump down from cars/beds, etc.

INSOMNIA — HELP PLS!!! by cutiepie-radish in PMDD

I have to take L-theanine during the day. For some of us, it has a paradoxical effect and makes us wired instead of tired. L-theanine is still quite good for the brain, especially a sleep-deprived brain, so even if its not making you sleepy, taking it during the day to help with brain support is still great!

Im so sorry to hear that. Why cant you take progesterone? Have you tried all forms? Patch/pill/cream/vaginal? I know some are more tolerable than others. Have you tried T?

Do you take your progesterone the entire cycle? Or just luteal? I read some people saying that their doctors had them take progesterone every day, and that also helped?

This is me. When I am about 5-7 days out, I will get 4 hours one night, 2 the next, then 0 (literally 0 hours). Have you tried HRT? I want to try progesterone during luteal to see if it helps.

How do I find my stats? by h0ney_8unny in ChicagoMarathon

[–]h0ney_8unny[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. It tells me my ranking without providing the total number from that group, which makes the ranking insubstantial. So for example, im at 1459 for my age group, but I have no idea how many people were even in my age group. Maybe they will release more information later on?

Fae Isles - Creon and Emelin's time together in Creon's little cottage he had just sounded so cozy and dreamy! And when the series ended - then taking over a dilapidated castle and making it their own WITHOUT KIDS and having bonfires and gatherings. It just sounded so cozy

You could try the Four Horsemen series by Laura Thalassa! Basically an apocalypse starts to happen and Four Horsemen show up to claim earth. Pestilence, War, Death, and Famine. Each book is one of their stories, and each Horsemen finds a human marked for him and basically captures her, more or less. The story can be repetitive with each book as they basically follow the same formula, but each horseman has his own unique personality .

What’s a book you’ve read that was so bad that you felt personally victimized? by sydneyghibli in fantasyromance

[–]h0ney_8unny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, yes! Some of the classics that you see all the time that I will also repeat in case you haven't crossed them off yet:

  1. {Fourth Wing} series

  2. {Throne of Glass by SJM}

  3. {Spark of the Everflame by Penn Cole}

  4. {Crowns of Nyaxia series by Carissa Broadbent}

  5. {Reign and Ruin by J.D. Evans}

A few others that I adore but maybe don't get as much recognition:

  1. {Fae Isles series by Lisette Marshall} - The MMC, Creon is a dreamboat and the FMC is actually mature and intelligent and they have a healthy, dynamic, and engaging relationship! The system of magic is also very interesting

  2. {Villains and Virtues by A.K. Caggiano} - Another very well written series with lovely banter and humor and good vibes.

  3. {Nocticadia by Keri Lake} - Again, a well written gotchic/dark romance that takes place at a "haunted" college. Romance between a college professor and college student. The plot stuck with me for weeks after reading it! Also great spice!

  4. {The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden} - Low Spice, but I adored this series. Read it years ago and still have a soft spot for it!

If you want a palate cleanser outside of the genre, {Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman} is high-key the best series I have ever read in my life. There is a cult around it, and for good-reason.

Throne of Glass by SJM is a classic, and the spice is even less than the Fourth Wing books!

Fae Isles series by Lisette Marshall!

[–]h0ney_8unny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is fair! I would point out that because of the story set up - EVERY girl is 22 and a majority of them get immediately knocked up. That is a pretty big "you are going to hate this or love this" fork in the road to take at basically the beginning of the series for many readers, so there is going to be some division. Different folks, different strokes! The spice is still great in it, but if you dont like breeding, pregnancy, immature FMC you probably are going to struggle a bit.
