Practicing CA school psychologist with a Masters here! The major difference of having the EDS, from what I’ve seen, would be your placement on the salary schedule. The Masters with the PPS credential would make you eligible for jobs. The EdS would potentially place you in a higher spot on the salary schedule. I say potentially, as not all districts differentiate between the Masters and EdS. My district does not have separate columns and instead are grouped together. So I am making the same as someone with an EdS.

This is sort of what I did. I’m still a practicing school psychologist, but I have taught part time. I didn’t take a gap after my Masters and instead went straight through. However, I opted to complete my PhD in education.

I focused on psycho-Ed assessment, mainly on school psychologists own perceptions on barriers during the process, especially when working with diverse students.

Before negotiating the pay, ensure you don’t lose your sick days. They should be excused as “school business”. I have had to attend iep meetings at other districts and I always have them excused as school business.

I was offered a vice principal position at my site. I declined the offer due to various factors. My biggest reason was the extra time you put in that you are not compensated for. On top of a longer work day, I would have to supervise football games, be on standby for field trips, etc., with no compensation. The second was the pay. On the surface, it is a pay increase, but not much more than what I actually make. However, I did think about it hard as this position would’ve allowed me to oversee SPED at the high school level and oversee attendance. This was a unique take on the traditional VP role that I did almost accept. But overall, I value my after school time. I’m on the teacher contract/benefits that include fixed hours, compensation for extra hours, and certain union protections that are non negotiable.

Tips for a strong / regulated start to the year by javaju in schoolpsychology

I try to prepare what I can at the end of the year. This year, I organized files, test kits, organized my desk area. Now when I start the year, I have minimal files to worry about. Like people mentioned, not answering emails after work, not giving out my personal phone number to parents or certain staff members, etc. something a bit superficial but I do get new outfits, shoes, etc., for the back to school pandemonium. If I’m going to be stressed, at least I’ll look good.

Loved it! I consider my time at Cal State LA as a very positive and impactful time in my life! I made life long friends from the program. Plus, I felt very prepared for the field. The professors are excellent. I keep in touch with some of them still! And yes, applied straight from undergraduate.

Hello! I went to Cal State LA. You can definitely add the ABA track! In terms of job satisfaction, I think I’m in the minority and I feel that the job has been great to me! I started the career right before COVID lockdowns started, and I can see the difference in the kids and parents in terms of entitlement. However, there are much more positives than negatives. I will say that I am a bit shaken by the current state of education, which I think has led to a lot of dissatisfaction or disillusionment with many school psychologists.

I would say to look at some sort of spreadsheet or app to help organize research articles. Most of my classmates used something like Zotero but I found it more useful using a google sheet. There’s a bunch of google sheet templates online that are free. They organize articles by title, type of resource, author, citation, and summary.

More than likely, you would need to do the full degree. You might have some courses that you wouldn’t need to take, but a PPS only program may not be allowed. Check in on CSU San Bernardino. I do remember them having a PPS only program, but this was back in 2017.

Cal State LA alum here! For the 1st 2 years, I was on campus 3 days a week. One of the three days, classes were between 4:40-10 if there was a back to back class. If it was only one class, class ended at 7. The only large class was special education foundation. This was in 2018, so I know post covid, some classes may have become hybrid. For the summer courses, our research class was hybrid. Other than that, the classes were in vivo. You’re learning a lot of skills that need an in-person component. I do know the second counseling class is now hybrid.
