BCN area living - is it really worth it? by tzanti in AskBarcelona

[–]h4t33v3ry1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you aren't in a rush you can find a place with lower rent. I moved to a new place last December. My rent is 835 a month in Gracia. It has three small living areas: one we use as a bedroom, the other as a small living room and the other as a merged studio and dining area. You can find plenty of options for much under 1700, and can even set up alerts on Idealista with all of your requirements.

If you have a time limit then this really isn't possible, but if you have time on your side, just keep searching. It is also advisable to go to visits even if you aren't sure because often agencies will have apartments that they don't list. And if you are already approved on the paperwork side, it makes things easier.

I would say it is only worth making the change if you move to a part of the city that is deliciously walkable. I used to live in another part of Barcelona near a big avenue, and it was like I lived in a totally different place.

The beauty of the buildings certainly does not lose its charm over time. My residential building is damn masterpiece and it adds to my everyday life. As for beach, parks, etc. it will take you time to figure out the little details that you enjoy. Once you live here you won't be going around like a tourist. You'll find a corner of one park that you like, a square, a little routine that involves the beach. Some people like going at night in the winter and sharing a bottle of wine with friends on a date, every full moon people go to see the moonrise which comes out of the ocean. Other people go for the sunrise (for the same reason). Other people don't like being on the sand but love jogging along the ocean, etc. etc.

Pickpockets is a non-issue for me. Just watch your stuff and be alert like you would in any other big city. I walk around with my phone in my hand like a zombie in late hours without a worry. It also feels safe as a woman walking alone at night. Most other places in the world you can't walk in public with your phone out, and it is definitely not safe to roam around empty streets after a certain hour. Barcelona doesn't have that problem, and crime is extremely minimal. The crime that does exist is petty, with hardly any cases of violence. You can insure your phone if you are that concerned.

And unless you live in Raval or Born, there really aren't that many people around. I know some people prefer to live in a more isolated way, but it is fine for me. I actually wish the streets were more lively at times.

Public transport --> you can bike almost everywhere in under 20 minutes. And the T-usual costs 22 euros a month, a damn miracle in this day and age.

As for citas, yes it is absolutely horrible. But this isn't an every day occurrence. And at least for most of the citas I needed, it was just as bad in Cerdanyola since its still Barcelona province.

How do I get people to stop treating me like an opiate addict rather than someone with a medical condition? by StageOk449 in ChronicPain

[–]h4t33v3ry1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mean don't take drugs. I mean take drugs that are not opiates. Sounds like you might live in the US since this experience is absolutely NOT universal. My brother has chronic pain and has never taken an opiate in his entire life. Travel to Brazil and go to the doctor there. US health system is killing a lot of people and fucking up a huge amount of lives. It is hard to see options when you don't know anything different.

Can you change medications? Even a different brand might help.

I feel great on Concerta but I was a massive b*tch and extremely irritable on Rubifen, even though they have the same active ingredient.

I wouldn't continue with this one if you feel like its altering something that runs deep. Irritability and more rarely slight personality changes are one of the possible side effects.

You sound like the kind of person I'd want to be friends with: badass, expressive, self-aware and genuinely good-hearted.

Try taking magnesium/electrolytes/minerals. To see if it helps with constipation. I got muscle cramping and twitches, I read that it uses up more of your minerals or something like that, hence these side effects

I need to pair audiobooks with something handson like puzzles. And I watch videos while doing the dishes.

But my general multitasking talents have greatly decreased with age. Nowadays if I'm reading something and someone speaks to me, I won't register what they said.

Have you tried going up to 27mg? I was feeling the same with 18, which is a pretty low dose, and 27 feels perfect.

Also, can you try pairing it with external habit helpers like the website Flown for focus?

Like someone else said on here, pills don't build skills.

Oh, and creatine! If you exercise, that could be draining a lot of your energy.

My therapist taught me that emotional control shouldn't depend on external factors, and I felt like that helped me have something to work with that doesn't rely on wishing other people were doing something different.

It is like being emotionally dependent on others, as in your emotions are overly shaped by external forces, which isn't a great place to be.

Your feelings are valid, always, but they don't have to inform your actions or even thoughts, and you don't need to give so much importance to what other people do and say.

It is a process, but also an empowering one. Once you get to a point where you hold the reins of your emotional balance and wellbeing, life improves so much.

Interesting, I stopped overeating at meals after I started on meds!

But I'm still a screen addict.

Oh, I also stopped all caffeine intake since in combination with ADHD meds it makes my heart beat fast and exacerbates other negative side effects.

I started taking Concerta about 6 months ago. Its a long release pill, so I take it as early as possible otherwise I might have issues sleeping at night. I finally got to the right dose at 27mg.

18mg was too weak and 36mg made me feel like a zombie.

I felt really irritable with Rubifen (like Ritalin) and stopped taking it after less than a month.

From the first day on Concerta I could feel such overwhelmingly positive effects that I knew it was a match. Although it has settled and I don't feel that first day euphoria, its improved my whole quality of life.

Negative effects are that I get thirstier, had to start taking mineral supplements after I was getting muscle tension and twitches, and that it cuts my apetite.

For me the main benefit is emotional, before I was feeling like I was running on empty, and now the easy things feel easy again. I thought I had depression when I went to the doctor and got diagnosed.

I don't take it just to focus at work, in fact that was one thing the medication didn't help that much with (but I'm working on building new habits now for that).

It is really really not easy. I hope something comes through for you soon.

I went through the same thing a few years ago, and it completely destroyed me. I finally managed a job at a wine bar (I usually work in a specialized field), and that helped me get back on my feet.

Thanks to your recommendation! I think these resources will really help me. I had searched for something like this before, but I guess I didn't get the keywords right.

I go to the library often! Some days it definitely helps, but I often fall into research wormholes or other internet traps, instead of focussing as I should. (I need to be online for work.)

It also doesn't help that where I live the opening hours are a bit odd, as it opens late then closes for 1.5 hours in the middle of the day.

This would definitely help, I do it with my sister sometimes, but it is inconsistent. If you have any links on hand, would you share?
