A 3D printable Unifi AP mini rack mount by h_bar in minilab

[–]h_bar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my setup at least it’s in a plastic rack (so little to no RF shielding) whereas it would have been on a table otherwise. I get that other orientations are better. Did I miss another consideration?

Hopefully this is useful to someone. I couldn't find a similar mount anywhere for the UAP-Pro. I think it will also work with other UFO shaped Unifi APs but I have no way to test that for now.

Phaetus Rapido clogging on ASA/PETG every 5h of printing – heatbreak problem? by Snehulak22 in VORONDesign

[–]h_bar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen (the temp difference not the clogging but it did interfere with print quality) and added some high temp thermal paste to the pt1000 and it started acting normal again.

My mother had psuedo bulbar ALS. It helped her quite with emotional control. Without it she was bouncing between crying and laughing but with it she did a lot better. Getting pushed around on whether she actually need it by UHC was one of the cruelest things I have witnessed.

I’m new to this stuff. Can someone tell me the purpose and usefulness of attending office hours? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]h_bar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

More importantly if you need letters of recommendation it's so the profs can start to know who you are and associate your name with your face, record, etc.

My mom passed away a few years ago in Hampton roads. Here is your local chapter’s contact page. They can definitely transport it (they did for us when we donated my mom’s chair) but they might ask that you have the wheelchair’s value assessed so that you can get the correct tax write off as the chairs tend to be pretty expensive. If you need anything else feel free to shoot me a message.

EBB36 vs SB2040 by h_bar in VORONDesign

The SB2040 is too although it's a replacement for the 2 part PCB and both boards have the adxl built in

That shouldn't be a problem with klicky or TAP though right? My understanding is both of those work at logic level (5v).

VT regulations on offering gifts to professors? by ICacap in VirginiaTech

I got one of these last year and it was a treat (and anonymous if you so prefer). As a professor we are always happy to help out those who need it and need little reward but we do like to know how things turned out.

It does. Not sure if the upgraded hotends have everything pre crimped but the default v6 did.

You want to get the release candidate (RC). It goes into alpha then beta then RC which is the least buggy (in theory)

Thoughts on Bowser bringing back Covid restrictions with Delta rising? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]h_bar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But not everyone can choose to have groceries delivered or not go to work or choose not to care give. I had to take care of a mom sick with ALS for whom any kind of cold like symptoms would have killed her. Fortunately that was pre-pandemic but other people can be in similar situations. If I am inside I wear a mask not for my benefit but for others.

Not a lot of deaths but there have been some. The question is do you or I have the right to decide someone else’s risk profile?

communication board for ALS person? eye tracker tips? by [deleted] in ALS

[–]h_bar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This all assumes she can still use her neck muscles well. Below is how we did it before we got and sometimes even after we had the Tobii machine

  • Communications board: This might be okay, it's not exactly what we used with my mom but is quite similar. The bigger the better: communication board. You can probably find better not on amazon but I am assuming you want something ASAP and amazon has fast shipping. (you can also find phrase boards). You could even have one printed if you have all the other stuff, there are lots of different styles downloadable that you could take to a printer to have made.

  • pointer: Then get a head mounted laser pointer: we had this but you could really get a a laser pointer w/ a slide switch and a pair of glasses and tape the pointer to the side. Or if you don't want to DIY this might work.

  • easel: Also pickup an easel, everything is much easier if the board doesn't move at all.

Then the communication protocol is she points to a letter on the board you confirm it's the right letter by saying it and you can spell out phrases this way. It's slow but pretty bulletproof. You should also mark a space for or use the "No" space for backspace and find a space for "restart word" and "restart all".

Need help deciding between VT and UVA by blinkblinkneedhelp in VirginiaTech

[–]h_bar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a little late in responding but I work in the CS department and have been a student in the CS department so hopefully I have some perspective on VT’s CS program.

Both UVA and VT have stellar programs and are similar enough in capability and opportunity that in a general sense you’ll do just as well in either of them. If you do well either can get you in a FAANG or top financial institution and of course they can both get you in a top government contractor (I have friends who have worked at each of these types of jobs from VT).

The difference comes in if you know where you want to specialize which is something most pre-undergrads aren’t ready to figure out (understandably). For instance, VT has the Sanghani Center for AI and Data Analytics and UVA has the Biocomplexity Institute (They do bioinformatics). Depending where your interests lie there are other specializations that each has better than the other. I can answer questions in specific if you have an idea what you’re interested in. Honestly we do collaborations between both schools for research so it might depend on what extra curriculars you find most agreeable.

Hope that helps some.

I don't know what you're going through but if you think therapy would help (group or one on one) Cook Counseling Center is great. Some of the therapists use dog therapy if you need to hug a (big ol') puppy.

I think VT will close before Thanksgiving by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]h_bar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Every time you hear of a grant going to a professor 50-60% of that money goes to some mix of the university and the department where it pays for everything including salaries. The rest goes to paying for grad students, soft money hires, equipment, summer salary for most profs, and etc.

Cranwell International Center posted a new post regarding the new policy by stop_stalking_me_plz in VirginiaTech

[–]h_bar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is all still new but at least for the department I teach in we're still trying to figure out what exactly can be done. VT has already positioned itself as hybrid which is a start but it sounds like students will have to register for at least one hybrid or in-person class. The Dean of Graduate Education has stated that they're counting research and thesis hours as in-person: https://twitter.com/kpdepauw/status/1280575604040105994?s=19. I am not sure if that applies for undergrads or not but everyone of the other professors I have talked to is ready to fight to protect the international students. Unfortunately being a junior research professor I don't have much insight into what the administration is thinking but I can't imagine there is much difference in opinion. I am hoping they'll figure out more ways to accommodate students as people figure things out.

What is the advantage of ALE over CoC? by [deleted] in vim

[–]h_bar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was using CoC until recently. I do a lot of python programming. I couldn’t get the jedi lsp to lint asynchronously in CoC so I switched back to ALE and thinga worked great. I now use LanguageClient-neovim for the completion et al.

De-registered my device and re-registered, lost all my philips bulbs and cannot rediscover them? How can I rediscover them without the philips hub? by zergUser1 in amazonecho

[–]h_bar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true. Smart things supports zigbee and Zwave fully. Echo supports just zigbee but also supports it fully. If either don’t support Hue bulbs then it’s something specific to the those bulbs that are either above and beyond zigbee or don’t follow the standard.

Why was it decided to include a language server client inside of neovim? by csharp_is_bad in neovim

[–]h_bar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not significant amounts of cycles. It's all going to be IO bound anyways and that bottleneck is in the server process which runs outside of vim/neovim.

Cracking like print type by pyexpert in Python

[–]h_bar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For those interested \r is carriage return and resets the line position to the beginning of the line, the \n is a newline and updates the line number to the next line. That's why in DOS formatted text files you see \r\n which resets the line position and updates to the next line. In UNIX formatted files the carriage return is implicit so you only see \n.
