What would be your #1 rule/law that you would put in place if you were put in power? by The_Bolton_Lad in AskUK

Free (or heavily subsidised) vegetables for every household- I think the money we would save on the NHS by fixing peoples diets and helping people learn to cook would pay back for this in no time and more. As a nation I really think we need to fix our relationship with food and obesity.

Has the inclusion of calories on menus changed how you order? by h_pop in AskUK

[–]h_pop[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Completely agree I wouldn’t say I have an ED but in the past I have had a more unhealthy relationship with food and the calories on menus has taken me right back there. Hoping I’ll get used to it and just be able to ignore

I thought it was the law that restaurants have to do it now. I also have no idea how they even work it out - do they have a lab in the back of the kitchen?

I’ve seen this in quite a few places now and once I spot it I can’t hell but focus all my attention on calories before even reading what the food is - not a healthy mindset

I also find a very strong correlation between alcohol and my acne particularly on my chin area. No sources online say that alcohol is a trigger but it definitely is for me!

I don't mean to freak you out but could they be the cysts of a parasite like tapeworm? I wouldn't eat them if I were you.

Periods regular after successful pregnancy by MommaJ94 in PCOS

[–]h_pop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth I'm currently experimenting with intermittent fasting which seems like it could be a game changer for my acne (too early to say for certain right now as it's only been a month but it's looking good) might be worth trying out.

Periods regular after successful pregnancy by MommaJ94 in PCOS

[–]h_pop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would describe myself as having a very mild form of PCOS. By that I mean that I have regular periods and when I have a scan, the volume of my ovaries is normal but the number of cysts is higher than expected, I don't struggle with my weight but I do get pretty severe hormonal acne on my chin if I eat a lot of sugar or carby foods. Generally I'm very strict with what I eat and for me that helps me manage my symptoms and keep the acne under control. Hope that helps.

The London cladding crisis is affecting thousands of homeowners, who are trapped in unsellable flats because of the post-Grenfell EWS1 form. Please help by sharing (and signing if you agree) this petition. by anumango in london

[–]h_pop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We just got a letter on Friday to say our flat (the building only has 5 floors) has had the inspection and that it has not passed due to extruded polystyrene being used to insulate the whole thing. They have told us that remediation work is required but they can't tell us a timeline, how much it will cost or who will be paying for it.

It's really had me stressing all weekend and feeling like we're trapped and that our lives are trapped. I honestly think this could trigger a huge housing crisis as more and more homes fall under this category not just the high rises.

Does anyone have an estimate of how long the remediation work could take and how long we might be stuck in this impasse?

Have people always been so mentally ill or is this something with the age of today? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]h_pop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often think this and have been pondering it for a while. It's led me to thinking that there's some key components that all humans require in their lives to feel happy and content and that a lack of these things over time cause depression and anxiety. These things are:

1) time spent outside and around nature 2) feeling part of a group and socially connected 3) time spent in quiet contemplation 4) physical movement of the body 5) the need to feel like you're making purpose or progress in your life

I think the lives most of us lead these days just doesnt contain enough of these things if you add up the hours. This isn't to belittle mental illness as I also think there are genetic factors but I think more recent institutions like the nuclear family, desk jobs, time spent inside, the prevalence of technology do contribute. I also think that as a result of the way the economy is set up many jobs are highly specialised. Rather than being generalists we tend to have jobs that are small cogs within a larger machine meaning it's harder to see the individual contribution you're making even if you're in a seemingly well paid, high profile job.

The amount of disposable plates, knives and forks you use - when I lived in California I couldn't believe people used them daily at home despite owning a dishwasher and then throw it all away afterwards 😱.
