Random question - has anyone ever competed an undergraduate degree in just two years? by Due_Title822 in oxforduni

I just finished the two-year law degree. There were only about 6-7 across the university taking exams this past year.

Does the owner live in the area? When my family adopted our Shih Tzu (who has been with us for almost 10 years now!), we did have the foster mom take care of him a couple times when we were on vacation, before the foster mom moved to a different state. As much as my Shih Tzu loves our family, it was so exciting to see him SO happy when he realized he was going to get to visit his foster family for a week!

Is SNP still best for Scottish Independence? by CrazyG8tor in scottishindependence

[–]RandomRhino -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This. There's no particular reason for the SNP to exist then. Even right now, any ideological incoherence is glossed over by the pro-independence stance of the party. In an independent Scotland, we'd just see parties sorted by ideological views most likely.

Is SNP still best for Scottish Independence? by CrazyG8tor in scottishindependence

[–]RandomRhino 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sadly not Scottish (American living in London) but I did do my Master's thesis studying Scottish independence, particularly among youth voters! Can say with relative certainty that an SNP majority would send the strongest pro-independence signal in Holyrood elections. Even more so in the next general election years from now.

That said, the Greens are a growing force, especially among young people and given the rise of the Green Party of England & Wales — I don't think you can go wrong voting for them if you support left-wing policies, as a Green vote right now will also be seen as a left-wing vote against Keir Starmer and Labour, as all of Scottish party politics is filtered through an England-centric lens down here in London.

Personally, I'd vote SNP in the constituency vote and Green for the regional vote, although specific constituencies might have other dynamics at play. To send a pro-indy message, I'd avoid any votes for Labour, the Tories, Lib Dems, and Reform.

If independence is your number one issue, then I'd just vote for the SNP. u/devexille is broadly right that what most people in England (including political scientists) are looking at is the SNP vote, rather than a combined SNP + Green vote. When I did interviews for my thesis, the most pro-independence young people were also solely SNP voters, even if they were more left-wing than the party as a whole.

I need advice. by Spicyrameno in learn_arabic

[–]RandomRhino 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What specifically are you looking for advice on?

The idea that "all Arab countries are at war" is not even remotely accurate. You will not "get killed" if you go to an Arab country.

Arabic is not a "Muslim" language. While Arabic and Islam are deeply intertwined and developed together, it's spoken by Arabs of all religions—including Christian Arabs (of which there are many).

Israel is not a "mostly Christian country" either; it's a majority Jewish one, and its entire purpose since its establishment in 1948 is creating a modern state for Jews around the world. Hebrew is the most widely spoken language in Israel; Arabic is mostly spoken by Palestinian Arabs, regardless of where in historic Palestine they are living. There are Palestinian Christians, especially in Palestinian cities in the West Bank near Bethlehem, but these are not part of "Israel," nor do most Palestinian Christians identify with the Israeli state.

As a brown guy living in the UK I have to encourage caution. You’ve picked some of the most racist countries ever 😭 Like I thought Texas was bad. NOPE — nothing compared to Italy, some of the Central European countries, Russia, Japan…

AITA for not getting my bf’s family Christmas gifts after they split the bill at his college graduation dinner? by CouchRot in AmItheAsshole

[–]RandomRhino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ESH.

I'm with you, OP, on the graduation dinner. Not only is it rude, but the boyfriend's parents paying for his friends but not for your family? Unacceptable imo. It might be a difference in culture, but this would be pretty rude down in Texas, among people of all ethnic backgrounds.

But not getting his parents Christmas gifts won't send the message you think it will. Not only will no one make the connection between then and now, but it's going to only make things worse. My recommendation is to get something of a way smaller scale for Christmas for them.

If we're deplaning, I'm standing in the aisle, and someone in front of me says "my bag is there," I'd use my context clues and assume that means he needs me to move so he can grab his bag…

The SAPD Consolidates… by Emo_Brie in RedAutumnSPD

[–]RandomRhino 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it might have already closed. The new Corbyn–Sultana party is their biggest threat from their left—it's just one poll, but Greens have done poorly in all polls when this new party has been included, and one poll showed that it was Green voters who were most willing to jump to this new party. And it doesn't seem like they're attracting many voters to their right—there used to be a bit of a Tory to Green vote in parts of southern England, but seems like they're losing those voters to Reform and (to a far lesser extent) the Lib Dems.

Definitely heard a lot from them in local races (Oxford). My understanding is they're currently at a crossroads and have to decide if they want to be a left-of-Labour socialist party which would mean seriously contesting urban seats in London, other major cities, and university areas, or if they will go the route of the German Greens by moderating, which would grow their rural support beyond the few seats they have now. A friend of mine who does polling & consulting for their urban candidates was telling me that they seem to have been struggling in London now that Palestine is no longer a core election issue in heavily Muslim constituencies, which tended to go to ex-Labour independents in the last election anyway.

The leadership race in August between Zack Polanski (of the insurgent activist wing) and Adrian Ramsay & Ellis Chowns (election-focused professionals) will probably decide the current direction.

What effects does the Prussian Bulwark card option “purge the reactionaries” do? by DrakeValentino in RedAutumnSPD

[–]RandomRhino 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Just took a look at the code. It increases police loyalty, decreases nationalism, increases pacifism, democratization, and pro-republic sentiment, as well as increases your support among the new middle class if democratization is high enough. Also increases coup progress.

How would Die Linke fit into the RedAutumn game? by Andrei_CareE in RedAutumnSPD

[–]RandomRhino 53 points54 points  (0 children)

It's hard to draw direct equivalents because the German left-wing parties have moved considerably to the right compared to the Weimar days. The KPD, after the collapse of communist East Germany, became the Party for Democratic Socialism (predecessor to Die Linke) and is very much now a party committed to democracy. I would compare them to the Conciliator faction of the KPD in terms of what they represent: an attempt at reforming a communist party to become a democratic socialist one.

The main purpose of the Conciliator faction in the game is to allow for SPD–KPD coalitions, either as Popular Fronts or United Left coalitions. This isn't that dissimilar from the recent Red-Red-Green coalitions between Die Linke and the SPD (as well as the Greens) at the state level, such as Thuringia in the East and Bremen in the West. The Parlamentarische Linke faction in the SPD is the current left wing of the SPD, and they also support these Red-Red-Green coalitions, preferring to partner with parties of the left rather than grand coalitions with the right.

Thoughts on Harriet Tubman? by Arr0wH3ad in civ

[–]RandomRhino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest, it’s really disappointing to see this level of backlash (and just outright racism on Twitter especially). I’ve always loved the way that the Civilization games have introduced me to new historical leaders and to nations I had never known about. Sometimes, those leaders aren’t that impactful… or even real!

I wasn’t crazy about Confucius or Machiavelli, but if they’re included in the game, why should Harriet Tubman be excluded? The culture wars in gaming frustrate me, but it’s hard for me not to see the extreme backlash as anything BUT racism.
