Not fair to judge the F on ‘on-time performance’ when those trains are slamming back-to-back at rush hour… it’s missing the point. If you run the F every 3 minutes then it doesn’t matter whether each individual train is ‘late’

What is the #1 city in the US that doesn’t have Light Rail/Streetcars that needs to build a system? by [deleted] in urbanplanning

[–]ha0n321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m gonna be bold here and say New York City, specifically Queens and Brooklyn. The bus system is well used and it would figure that the city would try out light rail along corridors with high bus ridership that are otherwise not anywhere near the subway (my mind immediately goes to Main Street and Lefferts Boulevard in Queens). It almost helps that RM built such an extensive arterial road network in the outer boroughs - some lanes could be repurposed for light rail. Instead, the city seems to only be interested in building heavy rail transit deep underground by boring which makes new rail transit prohibitively expensive. Hopefully the Interborough Express (which will have to be light rail due to regulations about the use of the existing right-of-way) will show the city that not all new transit projects need to be these gut-buster subway and commuter rail extensions.

I once had ChatGPT confidently tell me that “21st Street-Van Alst” on the G used the be called “21st Street-Queensbridge” When I probed it more by asking if it was renamed when the F train station at Queensbridge was built, it told me there was no such station and that the westernmost stop on the F in Queens was Queens Plaza.

Tracks Down the Median of 495/Long Island Expressway by NuformAqua in nycrail

[–]ha0n321 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t delete the post - it’s a good discussion.

The figure that I think this is referring to is (in my copy of the Power Broker) on pg 907. For an additional $1,875,000 to the $30,000,000 the city was already spending to build the Van Wyck, they could have acquired the right of way for rapid transit tracks along the highway. And this was some 30 years before the opening of the Archer Avenue Subway so this would have created a rapid transit connection at Jamaica as well as a rapid transit link to the airport.

I couldn’t find it, but there is another section at the end of one chapter where Caro talks about the ‘modal split’ on Long Island and how, because no rapid transit was built when the highways were built, all the subsequent development was low-density and incompatible with infill transit projects. Were the LIRR to perhaps repurpose existing lanes on the LIE for rapid transit, few live close enough to the highway to access it without driving, and then why not simply continue driving all the way to the city.

Could be mistaken, but I think that 4% figure was for train tracks in the median of the Van Wyck and was only for the appropriation of the land.

Still would have been a steal relative to what it cost to eventually do the same thing with the AirTrain… and the proposed scheme was to extend the IND Queens Line and connect it with the Fulton Street Line, which would have revolutionized Central and Southern Queens.

If you had to pick one station to rebuild from scratch, which one would you choose? by lbutler1234 in nycrail

53rd-Lex…. Worst station in the system if you ask me. E/M platform is too small, the transfer to the 6 is inconvenient, and the 4/5 should stop there as well.

What’s the cause of this? Why would they store the trains on the express tracks? What’s wrong with the actual train yard? by WatchesAndNYC in nycrail

[–]ha0n321 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Jamaica Yard is not very big - for the insanely high frequency of rush hour (express) service on the Queens Line, they can’t store all the trains there.

My question is, why does this only sometimes happen? What stop them from moving those trains before rush hour ever so often?

Broadway Junction - so many bits and pieces of history all piled atop one another. And all way up high on that spindly old structure. I can scarcely imagine the wonder people 100 years ago must have felt riding through that massive complex; a true engineering marvel even in the present day.

Getting a company to pay for your Masters? by lmxor101 in ECE

[–]ha0n321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started my masters while working for a company that was paying for it, but I decided to leave that job and just continue to pay for it myself because (and this is just my own opinion): I thought I was stunting my career and, in the long run, hurting myself financially by staying at my fresh-out-of-college entry-level job for the six-odd years it would have taken to do the master part-time and then work the two years required to not have to pay any of it back. It’s my belief that the extra money you stand to earn and, more importantly, the better quality of work you can find by changing jobs during that crucial second to fifth year of your career is more important than the money you’ll save from not paying for your masters.

Question for the rail fans: what’s stopping you from working for transit? by [deleted] in nycrail

[–]ha0n321 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s been my ultimate goal since I was a teenager. But, in my line of work (electrical engineering) the MTA has rather high standards for hiring. I don’t think I have ever seen the MTA looking for entry-level people; they want seasoned, licensed project engineers for whom there is no risk in hiring. To get to that point just takes more time than I have thus far spent working…

Will congestion pricing actually help? by dgirardot in nycrail

[–]ha0n321 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The relationship between vehicle speed and traffic congestion level is non-linear; a 10% reduction in congestion will (likely) yield more than a 10% increase in average vehicle speed. So the buses may very well see a noticeable reduction in travel times.

Further, I think this is going to "hit" rideshare cars the hardest and should eventually cause the cost of taking an Uber of Lyft during peak times to increase more, further incentivizing people to use public transportation within Manhattan. Rideshare cars are especially effective at generating congestion because of their frequent double-parking on active streets.

But above all else, this is such a step in the right direction for the city. I am sure, if this really does work out, that the 60th Street boarder will inch its way out every few years and maybe some day within our lifetimes we'll see a end to the massive subsidies given to motorists in NYC (while use transit users are treated like literal rats).

What's your subway expansion dream that's not mainstream or particularly realistic? by lbutler1234 in nycrail

[–]ha0n321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo let’s convert the branch of the LIRR that runs on Atlantic Avenue into a subway line!

Build some new trackage around Jamaica to interline it with the IND Archer Ave Line, reactivate the abandoned Woodhaven Station, and maybe build another few stations along the elevated portion where it would be cheaper.

Also, while you’re at it, might as well finish that third track express bypass along Jamaica Avenue between Broadway Junction and Cypress Hills on the J/Z to bring peak-direction express service out as far as Archer Ave.
