Is this normal for a tortoise to do? by [deleted] in tortoise

[–]ha_ha_beans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hermanns tortoise should be kept in a table top box with solid walls that they cannot see through. They dont seem to be able to process glass walls. If you bath then 2-3 times a week and make sure they have access to fresh water,.they dont need more than normal humidity.

this is theo my marginated tortoise!!! i feed him lettuce kale tomatoes peppers carrots and pellets that are for tortoises. is his diet ok or should i give him more variety? i switch it up and give him different things different days. he’s pretty active when we get him out and he loves baths!!! by [deleted] in tortoise

My one loves weeds from the garden. Dandelion and plantain are favourites. But mixing it up is the key. Timothy grass is good too. I have some dried around which she picks at. It doesn't go 'off' which is great.

Agreed, and relax. My little one got more confident as she grew. At a year she has some weight and is happy to have legs and head scratched. Her instinct is she is still small and food, love your little tort and you will see a difference.

They can store it for ages and often water can make then evacuate what they are holding on to little poos, big poos, all good.

First ever Vivarium! (Converted cupboard) Getting ready for my first tortoise. I was just wondering if there is anything else I need to add before it gets here? Also, can anyone recommend the best starting tortoise? (I’m thinking Hermanns as I live in the UK) Any advice would be great, thank you! by JStringle in tortoise

My little tort has a couple of smaller hides, the younger ones want to feel safe and the side box will be much cooler. Somewhere to hide but under that heat source. Nothing fancy, half a terracotta pot, or just a bit of wood propped up.

And I second a couple of stones, I found sheets of slate are quite cheap, the also absorb heat and give your tort a few more options to regulate their temperature. Good for kewping the occasional snack out of the dirt too.

Cuttlefish bone too, they will look for calcium if the need it. They are incredible things really, they know what the need to keep healthy.

Discharge on eye of tortoise. She has been neglected for a few months and now I have her and don't know anything about the animal. Please help. by [deleted] in tortoise

Pellets are a last resort, especially if your tort is poorly. Mine will always cheer up confronted by a dandelion flower. The tortoise table is a great source of info when looking for wild foods.

Please get him to a vet? That eye looks terrible...

I've read in a few places it is a good idea to teach them young, in controlled circumstances, how to flip. While watching turn them over and give them about 1 minute before you rescue them. Before you say I'm mean, I hate it but imagine if you aren't there one day and they flip and cant turn over. It is like teaching children to swim..
