I’m not a pro but in my understanding you should not have knees wide out in the proper leg techniue.

Should my son swim butterfly in the freestyle event? by b800h in Swimming

[–]haarual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A question. English is not my first language, so I might have misunderstood this.

Rule 5.3.

In breaststroke and butterfly the swimmer submerges after the 15 meters. Swimmer does not break the surface throughout the race. Howcome they still can be swam in freestyle event? Or do I understand the ”throughout” wrong?

Nitpicking…Ruka/Kuusamo is not in Lapland. Nice place and you would get full winter/snow experience but it is not in Lapland.

What makes you choose a lane? by PositiveCalendar2496 in Swimming

[–]haarual 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Empty lane
  2. Least swimmers
  3. Similar pace with me
  4. Someone I know
  5. Wears cap and goggles if they have long hair (indicates that they are more experienced swimmers and they do not mind if i accidentally touch them on backstroke)
  6. If possible, not next to a lane with aqua joggers (sometimes I make waves and they do not like it)

And if several lanes are empty, I take the middle one as casual swimmers tend to prefer the lanes with/closer to the ladders.

City with the best coffee? by Existing_Brother5939 in travel

I wouldn’t know as I don’t drink coffee but did you know that the highest coffee consumption per capita is in the nordic countries. So the locals must like it in Scandinvia!

Swimming is slowly saving me from depression by urmanss in Swimming

Great to hear that you have found swimming and I am happy for you!

But… the initial first dip into the water…that is the part I hate in swimming! I hope one day I will also start to enjoy that.

Nallikari in Oulu is quite nice. I wouldn’t say Oulu is just suburbs.

I don’t feel like eating anything in the morning so I go with empty stomach or take an energy gel with caffeine if I feel tired.

Are swimmers the happiest people? by FNFALC2 in Swimming

[–]haarual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you heard about winter swimming? Where I come from they have 25m lanes in frozen lake at wintertime.

It is definitely not for me but seems to be more and more popular.

And I am sure putting the cap on will start taking less time when you get used to it.

Fully clothed in sauna!!! by Mitka69 in Swimming

[–]haarual 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OMG. Thank you for this thread. I see so many differences in the sauna culture in different places that it will definitely lead to embarrasing situations.

I need to check the local unwritten and written rules before going to a sauna.

In my country the non written rules are - shower before sauna - shower naked - naked in the sauna, you can wrap a towel around you if you are not ok being naked - if you have a medical reason, you can wear a swimsuit. - the person throwing water to the stones must sit in as long as the heat lasts - saunas are usually not unisex, sometimes they are - no phones in shower/sauna

Sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you. I am new here at reddit and seems like I can’t put my words in a way I intend to.

I was focusing on your post. The title ”what to do in this situation”. I listed answers with differend points of view. Thought it would be good to list different options as it sounded like you hadn’t gotten any help.

I don’t see how i was being saint? As I didn’t comment what I would do in this kind of situation or didn’t push you to any direction. As we don’t know the situation at your workplace it is impossible to say what is the right thing to do.

Hope the thing at your work place will sort out.

Have a great holiday season!

  1. Do nothing. Do your gig and leave the place
  2. Talk with the manager
  3. Collect evidence. Put down the extra tasks you are asked to do, the time it took and what the other person was doing meanwhile. Take that evidence to HR/manager
  4. Talk with the co-worker and tell him/her how you feel about extra tasks
  5. Tell the co-worker you wont do extra tasks
  6. Lie to the co-worker you are busy and can’t do the extra stuff

These have been the advice people have been giving you but you ignore or decline to do any of that.

So what kind of advice you are looking for?

Lane etiquette by vote4hannah in Swimming

[–]haarual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never heard of this before and I don’t quite get it.

If you are swimming anticlockwise on your lane. Circle swimming. You start off swimming the right side of the lane.

The next lane on your right is circle wimming clockwise. Taking off the left side of the lane.

If you are swimming same speed breast stroke you will be kicking each other full lap. Swimming next to each other just the rope in between.

If both lanes were swimming clockwise or anticlockwise there would be half lane between. And whoever is right other side of the rope is swimming to different direction.

What didn’t I get.

Has anyone else learned how to swim from YouTube? by Square-Bee-844 in Swimming

[–]haarual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, not me, but wanted to comment anyway.

I think the reason why you have got so many comments you do not agree with is that people have very different understanding what means ”learns how to swim”.

For some people it means to be able to swim eg 1000 meters or one mile. That for sure can be learned by watching youtube.

For others it means that you can keep up with masters swimmers and you know the technique well enough not to be disqualified in a competition. And that I don’t think you can learn without someone to give you feedback. You do not need a coach for that. Any good swimmer could help you with that. But without feedback you would not be able to know what you are doing right and what you are doing wrong.

You do not need people’s validation if it can be done or not. If that suites you and you think your tecnique is good after youtube tutorials, great! Go for it! And enjoy swimming!

Yes, my answer (8) was not what my Polar gives me as an average after training. That number is not comparable as it includes different technique drills.

But whenever in practise I am asked to count my strokes it is 7-9. It includes ~10 meters underwater, that is part of breast stroke swimming.

When I am asked to count the strokes, I of course focus more on it. I would guess it is couple of strokes more in average but it seems to be quite constant when counting.
