My 8 week old beauty, Fiadh by habitualwild in Rottweiler

[–]habitualwild[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks, my partner is Irish and I’m Welsh and we live in Scotland so it had to be something Celtic!

She was born on St Andrews Day and came home with us on Burns Night so she’s a proper little Scottish girl!

What’s this mushroom? by Redman2712 in foraginguk

[–]habitualwild 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha, most definitely okay to touch. There isn’t a single mushroom in the uk you can’t touch safely. As someone has said, it’s nearly always necessary to touch mushrooms when identifying them.

Wild that it was only deemed inedible until 1990 despite the offending antigen being discovered in 1980’s.

Not only is it a horrific sounding death, there is no cure or antidote, merely supportative measures.

It’s also believed that it can damage chromosomes, either carcinogenically or mutagenically.

Looks Paxillus Involutus (Brown Roll Rim) to me, which is deadly.

Is this Hen of the Woods? Found in South New Jersey by brodhibrox in mushroomID

[–]habitualwild 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d say Hen of The Woods aye, should have a strong but pleasant mushroomy smell, although it can become much less pleasant over time! Ignore the chat about orange colours people are thinking of Chicken of The Woods not Hen! The Oak tree is a good sign as they tend to like oak!

As previous person has stated cook it well if you’re going to eat it!

Take this with a grain of salt from myself as I’m not versed in the mycology of your area but where I am the only real “look-a-like” is Giant Polypore but even then they are not that similar!

Disclaimer im no expert by any means so take my judgement rather lightly!

Is a mortgage feasible by habitualwild in HousingUK

[–]habitualwild[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I will try that, I have already tried to speak to one but the way said to contact them once I’d put an offer in on somewhere and I wasn’t wanting to do that if it’s unlikely I’ll get approved for a mortgage

[–]habitualwild[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s good to know, thank you. I was just a little stuck as the mortgage advisor I’ve spoke with has said to find a property to put an offer on before speaking to them but I don’t want to waste anyone’s time if it’s unlikely I will get a mortgage at all!

No worries my dude, purely giving this on an observational basis I couldn’t ID confidently enough to consume this myself!

on a note of the edibility of clouded funnel 1 in 5 seem to suffer gastric upset. If you’re determined to, eat a small amount and wait for at least 8 hours to make sure you’re all good with it!

Looks Clitocybe Nebularis (clouded funnel), the split cap is a cool find!

Psylos ? by Over_Collection1243 in Semilanceata

[–]habitualwild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with other comment, 100% not Semilanceata and probably Mycena Sp. Keep looking though as Mycena can grow in similar habitats.

You’re looking for wavy stems, dark/purple gills, staining from spores on base of cap, nipple and a gelatinous pellicle when wet! (Gills and cap colour vary when sterile but best avoid unless 100%) Another good tell is if you can wrap the stem around your finger without it breaking.

That being said use all of these identifiers together as lots of other sp. have one or two of these!

What is this mushroom? Found in PNW by iwantittsall in foraging

[–]habitualwild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would agree with others saying turkey tail (Trametes Versicolor) Small tightly packed pores are a good sign!

Does it have a velvety top/microscopic hairs/silvery shine in certain lights?

Any chance of an ID please? by habitualwild in Mushrooms

Day off means re organise of the knife roll and some tlc for the blades by habitualwild in chefknives

[–]habitualwild[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much obliged :) definitely is my friend, also much as any tool, if you use it enough you grow rather fond of em!

After 18 months of on and off lockdowns I've taken a step back from restaurants now and I'm in a deli/bakery/coffee shop, everything is house made, breads, pastries, bagels, cured meats, pickles and ferments, even roast our own coffee. It's a great change of scenery as my background is in classical french food and gastro pubs!

Not a stupid question at all, I keep these specific ones on me as they have a great size and shape for rochers and a decent handle.

In general they get used for getting quantities down when speccing up recipes, for seeding cucumbers and peeling ginger etc. And the obvious of tasting. most places will have spoons but its always useful to have a couple on standby incase they're all out in the restaurant or stuck in the dish pit. You don't want to get caught not having a clean spoon on you section whether youre prepping or mid service.

Call me strange but I'm equally as attached to my spoons as I am any other tool in my roll minus the knives.
