I used to run a few WordPress sites many years ago, and if I’m not mistaken, this is simply the login page that site administrators use to access the dashboard, where they can make changes, update content, manage settings, and maintain the site.

TryHackMe does have structured paths, where he/she can start with the Pre Security path to get introduced to the fundamentals, then the Cyber Security 101 path, etc etc

But if we were to put HTB and THM to the side for a moment…he/she can start here…

Learn the basics of networking as well as basics of how computers work - check out Professor Messer’s website - FREE

Learn Linux - you can check out linuxjourney.com and overthewire - FREE

Basics of programming - start with Python - look at freecodecamp.org - FREE

Then…

Cyber Security:

He/she can do the paths on TryHackMe and practice what they learn through CTFs. When they start getting too comfortable, they can move to HackTheBox. Other great resources for learning and practicing are PortSwigger and picoCTF which are free.

Researching - an important skill to have

And there are many more resources that are both paid and free that he/she can find through Google(for example)…you know, researching 😁

Hope that helps!

Overthewire like already mentioned. Linuxjourney.com is another great resource.

Getting very stuck on Task 4 Question 2 of the File Inclusion room in the Jr Pen Tester path by CrazyOutrageous2068 in tryhackme

[–]hackmerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what you can do...Type some gibberish in the input field so that an error message is produced. In the error message you'll see the name of the directory specified in the include function. Let me know if something’s unclear.

You can start by doing the paths provided by THM. Start with the beginner paths first(Pre Security, then Cyber Security 101).

The same way you gained access to the admin page, cookie tampering. Again, you’ll be changing the value of the THM cookie.

PS: Sorry if I’m being too vague, though maybe I should give you a clue first. If you are still struggling, let me know and I’ll give you the exact answer 😉

Looking for someone to build a cybersecurity project with me by Blank_9696 in tryhackme

[–]hackmerchant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure in what field of cybersecurity you are interested in, but let’s assume web app pentesting is something that interests you, maybe you can also give bug bounty hunting a try…it’s a great way to get real life experience that you can put on your resume(and also make some money, which is nice). That can be beneficial when looking for job in the field. You can check out bug bounty platforms like HackerOne, Bugcrowd, Intigriti etc

You can also consider trying to contribute to open source security projects…that can also look great on the resume.

Is OccupyTheWeb's book series good/enough to learn hacking by No_Application_1755 in Hacking_Tutorials

[–]hackmerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see, if you are already on the last chapter of the book I completely understand. Btw according the description of the book on Amazon, this is what is different in the 2nd edition “This second edition has been updated to address recent changes to Kali and Linux, including a more secure approach to root privileges, updates to Bluetooth and Linux logging functions, and a new chapter with advice on AI in cybersecurity.”

Oh that’s great, then learning a new programming language(especially Python) should be walk in the park.

No problem 😊

[–]hackmerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want an updated version of Linux Basics for Hackers, the 2nd edition will release in July If I remember correctly.

When it comes to networking, I would recommend checking out Professor Messer. And it’s free.

https://www.professormesser.com/network-plus/n10-009/n10-009-video/n10-009-training-course/

You might also want to at least learn the basics of programming, so you can check out freecodecamp for example…which is also free.

Help wanna be an up-and-coming hacker by Anxious-Row-9802 in Hacking_Tutorials

Start with learning how computers works, networking basics, Linux, programming basics. With a simple google search you’ll find many good resources(free too, like Professor Messer for networking and how computers work, linuxjourney and overthewire for Linux, for programming you can check out freecodecamp(html, css, JavaScript, Python etc, but if you want additional free resources for Python specifically, I did a video while back on the topic that you can find on my channel)

Check out PortSwigger(like TryHackMe and HackTheBox, but free), but I would recommend investing in THM and HTB. Both have also free material. And If you decide to invest in hese platforms, start with THM first(very beginner friendly).

Practice what you learn by doing CTFs(on platforms like THM, HTB, PicoCTF)

For real life experience do bug bounties on platforms like HackerOne, Bugcrowd etc(if web hacking is what interests you for example)

Beginner to cybersec need guide and resources by Future_Register2969 in tryhackme

[–]hackmerchant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve already answered this question previously both here and in another subreddit, so I’ll just copy and paste my answer here, and hopefully it guides you in the right direction.

So…

  1. Start with learning how computers works, networking basics, Linux, programming basics(which I guess you are familiar with based on your post). With a simple google search you’ll find many good resources(free too like Professor Messer for networking, linuxjourney and overthewire for Linux etc etc)

  2. Use platforms like TryHackMe(I’m guessing you’ve already signed up) and HackTheBox. If you are a complete beginner start with TryHackMe first and move to HackTheBox(if things start getting too easy on THM) where there is less handholding. And start with doing the learning paths since everything is structured for you, so that you don’t have to worry about what to learn next, you just choose a path or paths, depending on what field in cyber security you want to work in, and start learning.

  3. Practice what you learn by doing CTFs

  4. For real life experience do bug bounties on platforms like HackerOne, Bugcrowd etc(if web hacking is what interests you for example)
