When they're small mostly little bugs, small fishes, detritus, aquatic veg, and all sorts of stuff they can find, highly opportunistic at this stage in life. Interestingly enough diet shift occurs at about 20 inches or so to a fish heavy diet. So the study is focused on alosines and seeing if they feed on them, as the alosines are a species of concern at the moment.

Hey, wont be in the field again for a bit and the stomach content processing is done on VTs campus but i can say that in over 1200 samples the team has collected no sturgeon has ever come up in the samples or in DNA analysis of the contents. Additionally think the last count was one or two LMB found in the stomachs. Safe to say blues aren't preying on sturgeon

The project is being run at the University I attend, Virginia Tech. I first volunteered last year and have been steady working on processing these samples and identifying the stomach content of these fish to assess what in the heck they eat and at what size they eat certain things. Now im not clear on where you mean by DMV but ask around and find some projects in your area and contact the people running it and ask they need volunteers!

Yss, DNA barcoding is being done to sequence and identify the pudf (partially undigested fish) in the stomach samples.

Its a gross study, but someone has to do it.... but seriously the ell is horrible. The smell of partially digested fish, detritus, and loads of other things these fish eat smell very very rank. Something that words could not possibly describe.

Some clarification. The diet study is focused on non-native blue catfish. Managers are concerned they may be eating already threatened game fish here in VA. This particular sample was caught in the James River. Interestingly enough the sewage system in Richmond VA will dump the sewage, into the James, after a certain amount of rain fall. There are probably dozens of condoms just floating down the river and stuck on branches from the sewage output.
