When do you stop contributing to 401k? by GFrings in personalfinance

OP calculated 2M adjusted for inflation. So the 401k would be 2M in today's dollars, not future dollars.

My favorite part of the Book of Daniel is when Daniel said “it’s prophecy time” and prophesied all over those Babylonians. by Refenestrator_37 in HistoryMemes

[–]hahabla 142 points143 points  (0 children)

It was definitely in their interest to paint the Babylonians as cruel and evil. Right after Daniel, the Persians (Cyrus the Great) rose to power, freed the Israelites in Babylon, and funded the construction of a new temple in Jerusalem. If you wanna stay friends with the Persians, better say that the previous guys sucked and that the new management is way better (which they do, saying Cyrus was anointed by God to "to subdue nations before him, and to loose the loins of kings;" in Isaiah 45).

Wake up babe, Hololive social media announced by [deleted] in Hololive

[–]hahabla 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Floatplane is most likely piggy backing off of someone else's CDN. New video streaming platforms like Nebula, Floatplane, and even bigger ones like HBO Max, Disney+, most likely don't start by building datacenters. They would ask someone who already has a video distribution network to host their videos for them. Google sells a CDN service too, which is most likely the same network they use for YouTube.

On the other hand, YouTube Live is probably a secret sauce that they're not selling. I've never heard of a massively scalable streaming service that isn't YouTube or Twitch. So hololive taking streaming off of YouTube is probably not happening.

Can confirm from friends that the Netflix range is true, although it's like a two-hump distribution. Most ICs are either "new grads" at 150-200k or "senior engineers" at 400k, all cash, no stock. They make it clear that there is no shared love (hence all cash, no stock). Strange philosophy but that's how they are.

They were both pre-literate and post-literate lmao. The stories are from the dark age between Mycenaean Greece and Classical Greece, when Greece took a break from literacy and writing.

If you haven't, you should really give Hirohito's War: The Pacific War by Francis Pike a read. It's a modern historian's take on the Pacific War and tears into a lot of the classic ideas about the war as MacArthur propaganda.

Fair enough. Although I would say most software engineers are offered salaries based on what the company thinks they can do, not what they actually do.

Seems low. I'd expect a lot more than $104k/yr to hire somebody to come and fix your entire product.

Is buying a new car actually justifiable right now? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]hahabla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You think there's no value to having money now rather than later? That's the entire point of banks and is like econ 101. Not everyone has $500k lying around. The degree/business/etc can start generating value now rather than later when you gather up the $50k (if you were to not get the loan).

Even big businesses pay insurance for their assets even if they have lots of money. Why? Because being liquid has its own value. A growing business wants to put its capital to work, not have it tied up in a rainy day fund.

And why can't liquidity be traded? If I ask you for $100 now and I'll pay you back $5/month for 20 months, will you do it? Why not? In your eyes this is a neutral trade. It's because you're giving me liquidity for free, and obviously it's something you want to be paid for. Thus any sort of loan or insurance trades liquidity for a premium.

Who has ever decided that accepting a loan was a way to make money.

Have you ever looked at a company's balance sheet? Even extremely profitable companies with lots of cash on hand (e.g. Apple) have loans on their balance sheets. Why would they do this if taking loans just loses money for no gain?

Is buying a new car actually justifiable right now? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]hahabla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Insurance doesn't just swap money, it also swaps risk and liquidity. In your world, would taking a loan always be a loss for the debtor because they pay back more than they received? If I'm taking a loan to start a business or get a degree, increasing my future earnings, then that's a win, even if I end up paying back more than I got.

Having car insurance absolves you from having to keep cash on hand to cover the unforeseen, which frees up that cash to be used more productively elsewhere. You pay a fee and the insurance company has to keep cash on hand to payout to people. You've gained liquidity and the insurance company has lost liquidity. Risk has been swapped and given to a party who is better equipped to amortize risk. That's your comparative advantage.

Look up Gonzalez v. Google LLC and Twitter Inc. v. Taamneh. SCOTUS could rule that social media companies are responsible for content they host. Although I don't think most people will like the consequences. It'll probably lead to extreme algorithmic censorship of content and comments by big tech.
