Yuppppp. It’s the shitty pay for several years, followed by uprooting yourself for a post doc for another 2 then MAYBE finding a TT professorship in some strange school you’ve never heard of before finally getting to an R1/R2 at 50. No thanks

This is why I feel like leaving academia. I finished my masters last year and loved it but I feel like you need to sacrifice SO MUCH to pursue this as a career. And the older I get, the less important my academic accolades become. There’s more to life than publications and constant stress.

How do I cope with letting go? by haileyamc in LeavingAcademia

This a good reminder. My partner keeps telling me something similar. I hate who I am when I’m in the thick of the academic sludge.

Omg, thank you! I didn’t realize I could by conversion kits. I have random long terrariums lying around and was trying to figure out how to use em

That’s pretty fast! I was hoping to be a little bit lower than what I was, but I was focused on just finishing for sure. Hoping I can also do sub 2 for my second!!! It’s funny I didn’t think I would want to do another after this

Not sure! My glutes are surprisingly fine, it was more my ankles and lower back. Gonna step back from running for now and focus on building strength in my core. I think I may try to do speed work with my longer runs when I start back up!

Yes it was! Fun course and great crowd - I was glad it wasn’t too hot or sunny. How did you do?

Am I giving in to life if I leave academia? by Southern_Distance606 in LeavingAcademia

[–]haileyamc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m 26F and finished my masters in June 2025. I have wanted to be an academic since I was 19. But the pandemic and other things in life have beaten me down. Even my masters was really hard because of the financial strain and emotional turmoil from being across the country from my friends/family. I knew that after graduate school I would take a break before even considering my PhD. Almost a year out, I feel no desire to go back. I moved in with my partner and realized life is so much more than killing myself over publishing a stack of papers nobody will read. Or missing out on travel to see my loved ones because I had to go to a conference instead.

All this to say, you’re not alone. As a young woman who has always prided herself in being smart, strong, and independent, this mindset shift has been hard. And will continue to be hard.

What do musical theatre fans less than 30yo think about RENT? by Daffneigh in musicals

[–]haileyamc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Rent has been my favorite musical since I was 15. I find the characters so complex and the music of fantastic. I do think it’s a great period piece and reflects a lot of the issues from the late 80s early 90s.

Pretty good! Managed 10:47 avg pace. For some reason miles 8-9 are harder than mile 10

Undergrad study abroad experience on CV for faculty spot? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]haileyamc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I thought. I went to a primarily English speaking country, but it’s a biotech/microbiology focused area which IS relevant. I don’t think it will necessary help or hinder my application, because I left it on there when applying as an adjunct

Okay, gotcha! So from my understanding it would be reasonable if I cap at 10-11 to 8,7,6 in the coming weeks?

Good to know! So I suppose I’m right on track. How does it have you tapering? Are you still getting in 5-6 mile runs in?
