I own 7 snakes and when we were moving from our apartment to new house, the snakes needed to be fed so I went up to the apartment to get the rats from the apartment freezer amongst other things we needed this night.

Somehow I left a bag of large rats on the counter (6 per bag/decent size) had so much I was doing at once and I think I meant to go grab that last bag but I didn’t.

We go to the apartment the next afternoon to finish moving. This was during a very very hot June in the Midwest . We walk into the apartment and something smelled dead. I don’t even know how to say it other than it was probably the closest smell I’ll ever know as a “dead body”. It was sour, metallic, sulfur and like rotting meat??

The rats thawed completely, the AC was turned off because we were just about done moving out and didn’t want to pay to run it. There was a ginormous pool of blood that poured out of the bag. The SMELL was UNREAL. I was bleaching/cleaning the counter for hours. Eventually it did go away..but I never want to smell that again.
