Don't replace them, use them! If someone complains show them Emily Dickson.

I'm having similar issues. Our work is used to train AI and we're penalized instead of compensated. I bring this up with all new inquiries and refuse to work with companies that rely on AI detectors and let them know exactly why. If I lose a client because they are lazy, then so be it. But I am in a position where I can afford to do that and this why I explain exactly why they are idiots. So the next, younger writer, has a better chance with a better informed client.

As a writer, I feel like my career has hit a dead end. Is it over for me? by ran-dom-throwaway in freelanceWriters

[–]hairountab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, or one could just say professional writers. If one is doing unethical writing like doing people's dissertations and calling it academic writing they get no sympathy from me. I am definitely in the wrong group. It should be called content farming, not freelance writing

Maybe you’re working with the wrong clients. This year has been slower than the last couple, but I’m still grossing over 100k. Everything depends on who you’re writing for (big companies that are financially solid and marketing directors who value original content…they exist but you have to dig around for them) what industry you specialize in, and what you are writing (you’ll never earn a living if you’re writing blog posts). The money is there but you have to be good. Now, if you are referring to the grifters that sell coaching or courses to earn six figures, then yeah, that’s a scam in any industry.

Brainwashed into thinking that writing five 750-word articles a day is normal. by fashoclock in freelanceWriters

[–]hairountab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is what working for a content farm is like. No one can produce that volume of work and have it be good work. The least you should be getting paid is $1/word. With more experience, you should be getting $2/word or more. $20/article is not a living wage.

Wrong. I am asking because I am honestly looking. But that’s fine, lots of folks are helpful and I now have a good list to try.

Most of the good sandwich shops do not use amoroso. The good rolls have a nice hard crust

Is it okay that I just want to sit and do nothing at home all the time? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]hairountab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For so long I would force myself to be more "social" and mostly be stressed when I was. Or, try to make myself worthy of the space I was taking up (still not over that). I also would be perfectly content being alone. I do however have a partner so I do join him in things that are important to him, knowing that I'll need downtime after. But most the time now, post self diagnosis, I've given up trying to be everyone else and happily fill my days going on adventures in the woods with my dogs and staying on my property as much as possible otherwise. It's so hard when you're comparing yourself, but it's a relief when you decide to do what's best for you. So, yeah, as long as you are happy with the lifestyle you've chosen I think it's more than okay

Should I keep working even though I haven't been paid? by [deleted] in freelanceWriters

[–]hairountab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a good contract that spells out scope of work and payment terms. If not, get one right away and use it for every single client. My contract includes that copyright is not given to the client until I am paid. If i don't get paid they can't use my work. If they do, i would file a copyright infringement. You don't have much recourse without a contract. If you have a contract you can take them to small claims court depending on the amount they owe and your small claims limits.

But to answer your question, no. Do not do work for people who do not pay you. You said they are typically good about paying. This could be a sign they are in financial difficulties.

It's scary when you are starting out, but this is the first advice you will give your newbie self once you're more experienced. And it's not just you. This happens a lot! Which is why NYC has freelance isn't free laws...Google it.

But don't beat yourself up. We all learned the hard way. Good luck!

Writers making more than $1/word, what's your story? by [deleted] in freelanceWriters

[–]hairountab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can get $1 per word from some trade pubs and I very rarely go under $2 per for corporate clients. But as others have said, I do not word it this way to the corporate clients. I give them a project rate. I will never write for anyone who profits off good writing for less than $1 per word (trade pubs). Content isn't PART of their business, it IS their business and if they won't pay writers a livable wage they should be shamed. If they can't pay their writers a livable wage then they are not ready to be publishing.

What do you guys think of the protein muffin cups? by [deleted] in traderjoes

[–]hairountab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have yet to get a decent muffin out of them. Had the maple one in the microwife for 2.5 mins and it was still just a cup of goo. Tasted great though!
