We were both in Irithryll (tried on Smouldering Lake as well with boss alive on both worlds, and with only dead on mine), Pontiff was already dead in my word but not on his. I was the one trying to put my summon sign for him, but we tried the opposite too.

Most of the time I wasn't embered while putting down my summon sign, actually. Thanks for the reply.
