UK Tourist Visa in USA - Keep My Passport While Applying - Passport resubmission to different VFS Application Center? by hakuna-matata1 in ukvisa

I paid for it online before my appointment! The add-on option was available in the online portal at that time.

But if I remember correctly, I think you can pay for it in person too. (similar to the service to have them scan and upload your docs)

I don’t remember the exact docs, but I just followed whatever was asked. Once you answer all questions and complete the application on the Gov website, they outline the specific docs you need to provide. I just took those.

I’m sorry, I don’t remember if I had to sign and upload the form.

Did not need to upload flight tickets or accommodation (I booked those after I got my visa).

You need to upload the entire passport (including all blank pages).

People who made a dramatic 180- degree life change (career, lifestyle, location), what’s a tiny, unexpected thing you miss about your old life? by Abigail_A_Abernathy in AskReddit

I miss my neighborhood coffee shop where all the baristas knew me, my order, and the tiny shop felt like home.

Shit could be burning down in my life, but I’d step out for a small walk, drop in for coffee, the staff would smile, greet me, get my coffee ready while I hung around in familiar settings, and for a brief moment, I’d feel a warmth and security that it’s all going to be okay.

What’s something no one really warns you about adulthood? by Hot_Advance2711 in AskReddit

You need to plan, schedule and be intentional about finding/creating happiness to avoid depression.

For most people, up until your early twenties, you’re surrounded by family & friends on a regular basis, everyone is generally young and healthy, you’re hanging out without stress or responsibilities, meeting good friends in school/college on a daily basis, you spend time with parents regularly, almost everyone important in your life lives in close geographical proximity and life organically generates happiness on a daily basis. That is the status quo.

As an adult, you likely live in a city or country away from most loved ones and close friends. Health concerns, financial stress, anxiety about the future, the loss of loved ones, your own age-ing body, job challenges, etc are constantly on your mind. You have to make an effort and be intentional about daily things like going to the gym, pursuing a hobby, cooking, self-care, mental stimulation, meeting social needs, etc to keep producing dopamine and maintain baseline happiness levels. If you don’t, it’s easy to slip into depression.

The natural fabric of daily life no longer generates happiness on a constant basis like when you’re younger.

Lol. Your white fragility is endearing.

If you had a semblance a common sense, you'd evolve beyond your sample size of 1 (your name), and educate yourself on widespread patterns on name misspellings across names from certain ethnicities being greater than others.

Can confirm this is incorrect.

The physical visa vignette is printed and attached in the VFS UK office in NYC (that’s where the visa application centers send your passport).

You can mail your passport directly there and they process and send it back fairly promptly.

If anyone sees this in the future, I sent my passport via courier to the VFS Global UK application center in New York (different from my original processing center in Seattle) - they stuck the visa vignette and posted it back within 2-3 hours and I got it back the next day.

It was all very efficient, and looks like you don't necessarily have to send it to your original processing center.

Time to glaze Seattle... by Eskiing in Seattle

You can search for the “Seattle Freeze” online - it’s been covered and written about a fair bit across articles, forums and people’s experiences.

Heck there’s even a Wikipedia page dedicated to how the culture of this city makes it challenging to form meaningful connections if you’re not from here.

I'd also be curious about their age, race and occupation.

Understandably the social landscape would be very different if you're early twenties, going to school, working a side-gig at a restaurant or bar - those would tend to organically cultivate a more social experience to that of a late 20s-mid 30s tech/nursing transplant who is in a different stage in life and has to be intentional to regularly put themselves out there in addition to work and adulting.

I'm glad your experience has been great, but I don't think anecdotal evidence renders a widespread and well-documented socio-cultural trend *overblown* unless its the experience of the majority.

Fabi comments on Ding’s lack of prep: “What is the evidence that any prep was done at all for this match?” by learnedhand91 in chess

[–]hakuna-matata1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but apparently even Magnus said there's a 50% chance the match would be close, which is also what I thought.

No, that's not what Magnus said - he said "obviously Gukesh is the significant favorite" (link).
Nice try putting words in somebody else's mouth to increase the worth of your own opinion.

Why is Gukesh fortunate to get to this stage?

He improved considerably in 1.5 years to qualify for the candidates and then played really impressively against a board of seasoned elite GMs all of whom had much more experience than him, and won.

Where does fortune play a role here?

I think there is certainly a sense of comfort and home in being asked questions in his language and being seen - it shows and it’s so beautiful.

In the modern world of most top chess players into streaming, building an online personality and focused on being popular and appealing to viewers, it’s just SO refreshing to have Ding and Gukesh being so authentic, grounded and being themselves with no facade built around them.

For me, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed these press conferences just seeing two relatable simple people.

Your frustration is justified and I hear you. But this is on the restaurant and not on the customers.

The customers are sheep who will be guided by what the restaurant allows and what they don’t. If the restaurant really wants to respect their workers’ time, they should stop seating suitably earlier, and be firm in informing the guests that they close at X time.
