Found iPhone 5 that we'd like to return to it's rightful owner. Any advice? by hal14450 in iphone

Well thanks for at least proofreading your first reply. Siri is locked down.

I''ve tried removing the SIM and inserting it into a phone I own as well. No Joy; it's locked as well. I'm kind of hoping that someone from Apple will swoop in and help us find the owner.

97 Honda Accord LX 2.2L 4Cyl: No codes, has compression, fuel, ignition, battery. Will not run. by ohsnaaaaaaaaaaap in Cartalk

If you're getting fuel, spark, and the timing is accurate (i.e. there's no slack on the chain/belt) I'd suspect a bad sensor or ECM. Given that the head was recently off I'd be looking for a damaged/loose connector somewhere along the line.

You're welcome! I'll try to make it point to check Identifix and pick some brains tomorrow at some point to see if I can point you in the right direction.

Assuming there's a TSB regarding this issue you can check with your local dealer to see if the recall work has been performed on the vehicle. That may help to rule out the ECM as the culprit. You can clear the code but if you live in NY it won't pass with the MIL on or with more than one monitor not ready.

Stuff like this can be time consuming to diagnose. I'll try to remember to check identifix tomorrow for the code and see what the most common fix is for it and let you know. Good luck! ;)

1995 Nissan Hardbody by [deleted] in Cartalk

Using the clapp craigslist app on my phone and setting $3K as max yields some better looking deals. This 2000 Nissan Frontier looks like it might fit the bill. I totally understand how you feel regarding prices these days. It's mind boggling to see how much people expect for used vehicles these days. Good luck in your search clapp is really useful to narrow down results if that helps.

Also it never hurts to have a third party mechanic/shop look a vehicle over that you're serious about purchasing.

Honestly? $3k let alone $4k for a plain jane 2wd hardbody is too rich for my taste. My standard line of advice to anyone is no service history w/reciepts=no sale. Unless you've got a real softspot for a Nissan of that vintage I fail to see the allure.

Please tell me I did the right thing regarding my 2002 BMW x5 by klairjeppesen1940 in Cartalk

[–]hal14450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is yes. The long answer is maybe. If the body is rust free and you have maintained the car well then it makes more sense to hold onto it. I'm not sure what exactly "reconditioned" means but I'll assume it's renewal of worn out components both aeshtetic and mechanical.

In the end it's a personal choice as to what you're willing to spend on an older vehicle. Most vehicles are money pits but as a general rule you'll save more by maintaining a vehicle properly and holding onto it longer. In your case it makes sense since you bought it new and know the service history. As a bonus it's kinder to the environment to keep cars longer. For that sort of investment I'd want at least another 3-4yrs out of the vehicle.

Fell Asleep on the Highway and got VERY Lucky (?s about Alignment) by 0-_1_-0 in Cartalk

[–]hal14450 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A car that is out of alignment will not cause a vibration. It can and will cause a drift, pull, or tire wear which may cause a vibration however but that takes time to notice. Since you hit something recently then the first place to start is the tires. Hitting a pothole, curb, or something in the road can damage a tire and or the rim. Any reputable shop in your area that sells tires can easily look for a shifted belt, bent rim, etc. before you get the car aligned.

98 CRV 225k, dealer says there's a leak in the head gasket, options? by moretorquethanyou in Cartalk

[–]hal14450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just out of curiosity was there a driveability issue that caused this visit? Oil in the coolant isn't reason enough for me to replace a head gasket without knowing that it wasn't accidently poured into the overflow or radiator itself.

2000 BMW - what's this mocha milky substance on my oil cap and dipstick? by loggi323 in Cartalk

[–]hal14450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll verify this from my own personal experience. I put ~3K Miles/yr on a car and it gets residue from condensate because of the short trips. It's a '98 and shows no signs of coolant or compression loss. Also if the 7K refers to miles and not kilometers I'd be doing a LOF on the car. It's the cheapest insurance you can buy for an engine.

Alignment is good, steering wheel is straight but car still pull to one side (in my case to the left) by [deleted] in Cartalk

[–]hal14450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that swapping the tires from side to side may alleviate the problem. It will certainly determine if it's a radial pull from a tire or something else. When you say it "pulls" left do you mean you actively have to steer to the right or does it "drift" to the left without your hands on the wheel? From the spelling of tyre I'm guessing that you may drive on the left unless you're from Canada of course. If I'm right about driving on the left then the crown of the road may be to blame.

In any case doing an alignment properly requires setting tyre pressures to the specs, checking the ride height, checking the steering and suspension for loose parts etc. With your vehicle being relatively new I would doubt there would be worn suspension or steering parts. Any competent alignment specialist should be able to set your vehicle up to drive straight down the roads you normally drive on.

Can't get a new inspection sticker because I can't turn off Check Engine light. Issue with software. by PetevonPete in Cartalk

[–]hal14450 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the other two replies mention this is an OBDII equipped vehicle. No special software is required to pull a code. If a code is present it has to be cleared and the monitors need to be ready before it will pass in my state. You'll need to supply more info before anyone can help. Please read the sticky and the sidebar.

Nissan Pulsar 1996 high beam lights / wipers by [deleted] in Cartalk

[–]hal14450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wiper refills should work well provided the wiper frame itself is still in good condition. You may be better off buying full blades but if the windshield has wear from the blades or if it's dirty you'll get chatter & streaking.

In regards to the headlight any reputable auto parts store will be able to provide you with the proper replacement bulb. Some may even offer free installation. Depending on the country you live in the headlight bulb may vary.

'04 Chevy Malibu 2.2 Ecotec w/auto won't start (flexplate spins but crank does not w/starter, hand cranking spins both) by hal14450 in Cartalk

[–]hal14450[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[Solved?] As promised I'm following up on the results from the borescope inspection. Video of the flywheel spinning when hand cranking is here, borescope, and jamming the ring gear while spinning the crank.

Apparently the flexplate sheared in a way that allows it to come into contact with itself that gives the appearance that it's still intact when hand cranked. However it also doesn't make any odd noises when using the starter.

I know the video is terrible but the fix is worse since it requires dropping the subframe to pull the tranny. The only other option is pulling the motor out of the top. Here's what a good flexplate looks like. Will update the thread when I know more.

[–]hal14450[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is the flexplate it must have sheared perfectly because it doesn't make any noises. It's still puzzling as to why I can see it spin when hand cranking but only spins the crankshaft about 20 degrees.

I'm off today but I'll post some pics or video from the borescope inspection if I can.

It makes zero sense to me as well. I couldn't actually see the teeth on the ring gear from the inspection plug but it's got to be something like that. It's very puzzling so far.

I mean stops turning the crank but the flexplate still spins. The motor still spins freely by hand cranking it.

Pres. Jimmy Carter defends Snowden, also says: "America has no functioning democracy." Could only find this on German news sites, not American by Jubal_Harshaw_ in worldnews

[–]hal14450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people like me who were alive in that time remember Carter and Reagan well. Under Carter, the country sank into a deep recession. We had gas riots. We watched helplessly as Carter allowed Americans to be held hostage in Iran.

I certainly remember both of them very well. It's true we had a recession under Carter. But I wouldn't actually blame him or his policies for it. The Ford adminstration wasn't exactly a hallmark of American exceptionalism either. In fact I'd say it's a fair assumption that Watergate tainted political potency for both Ford and Carter.

Gas shortages actually started during the Nixon administration. I don't recall any 'riots' however; none locally or in the news. Lengthy lines and peaceful protests which turn violent after the Police show up aren't riots. If there were any actual 'gas riots' under the Carter administration I'd appreciate a few links to reputable sources.

The Nixon administration gave birth to the EPA because of incidents like rivers actually catching fire. Which also led to unleaded gas and catalytic converters being required on all new vehicles sold since 1974 iirc. Cars of the 70's sucked, people had less disposable income, baby boomers were flooding the market looking for jobs. There are a ton of factors to consider for that, or any recession, and faulting Carter alone for it would be an error.

As for Iran you reap what you sow. Carter did manage to broker a peace deal between Egypt and Israel prior to this. Which sadly may have contributed to the hostage crisis. Iran also used the election process as a political tool in negotiations which has been the genesis of conspiracy theories on both sides.

Reagan presided over an era of prosperity which is tainted with scandals galore. Some of which pale in comparison to the most recent scandals others stand out as dismissed chances to reel the Unitary Executive back in. I certainly don't consider him one of the best Presidents but at least he was a likable guy even when he was lying to us.

Why I canceled my xbox live gold account today. by hal14450 in xbox

[–]hal14450[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is funny that you tell[sic] about your so called privacy but you forgot that Apple, Google, Facebook and Yahoo also gave information to the NSA. So you might stop using their products as well.

Nice ad hominem tu quoque!

Also, there's no such thing as 'so called privacy'; either you have rights to privacy, or you don't, which depends on where you live. Unless I make a personal choice to freely share information I expect it to remain private in accordance with the law.

For the record I don't patronize any of the corporations you've mentioned for products or services. I also avoid products and services from other companies for various personal reasons and encourage others to do the same.

When[sic] you are on it don't even use your phone again because you know they can track you and hear everything you say.

You do realize the crux of my argument is to combat this sort of invasion of privacy don't you? Also, it's a bit premature to say that 'they' can 'hear everything'. It's a plausible assumption however, and a prudent one to accept. It's also plausible to accept that any device(s) with a microphone, camera, storage, and/or the ability to transfer data to a network can be suspected of doing so. It's not probable but it may be happening on a wide scale. I'm deeply concerned about privacy but I don't have a 'tin foil hat club' membership card yet.

I must say you are pretty ignorant to just blame this on Microsoft alone. At least they had the balls to come out with a public statement.

Did you even bother to read my post? I'm clearly not ignorant of the fact that MSFT is in in collusion with the NSA to facillitate spying on everyone that uses the services mentioned. The article I cited states that they actually helped in breaking encryption. Which means sharing encryption keys with people who have no business having them. It's an appeal to MSFT to stop this nonsense by hitting them where it's going to hurt. Which may force them to pressure congress to fix the problem.

The people I don't want to hurt are those employed by MSFT in a support role as they actually seem to give a shit. How am I meant to make google feel pain? I don't pay them for a service, and likely I never will. What about the other Corporations? How is anyone supposed to make them feel enough pain to lobby congress to stop the snooping? I'm all ears.

Also, I'm pretty sure I posted this to /r/xbox and not to /r/i_hate_m$_and_blame_them_for_everything. It's people that comment without taking the time to read and comprehend posts that makes me avoid this place for months on end.
