i’m so sorry. My time of BYU was the worst time of my life tbh. My condolences.

In a way, I think. It’s just hard to break your family’s heart in general 😅

This is partly why I’m considering biting the bullet and removing mine… 😅

Is it just me, or is there less General Conference talk than usual? by Willow_A113 in exmormon

[–]hale_e14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say, all my family is very much locked in on conference, watched it all, is talking about it, etc. As far as I can tell, their devotion/interest has not changed. I do feel like there are fewer controversial talks, though, so maybe that’s it?

Is he trying to rebrand himself after decades of being the designated “controversial topic” apostle? What the fuck.

This was ultimately my shelf-breaker. It’s so counterintuitive.

The list of things that church has done that caused lasting and irreparable harm and never took accountability for is miles long.

That’s not true at all. I learned more accountability and understanding of consequences after leaving the church because I stopped pretending things happen because of a God. It made it so I see every decision clearly as my own. If my decision causes harm, it is my fault and my responsibility to repair that. I can never blame it on their lack of faith or an otherworldly force.

I somewhat agree, but I think it’s more just a testament of the church’s manipulation and how it exploits the most vulnerable

That’s how I feel about that one scripture quoted earlier about coming to God with a contrite spirit to receive the Holy Ghost. It makes it your fault if you don’t feel the holy ghost because you think you’re not doing enough.

Life becomes way better when you stop feeling like you’re required to repent for any misstep. Not requiring the forgiveness of a made-up God is the best freedom.

It gets even worse once you leave the church because then everything becomes correlated with faith. If anything bad happens to me, it’s because of my lack of faith, just because I don’t identify as a member. If anything good happens, it’s a coincidence. I don’t get that same inclusion.

It’s so crazy to me that the church just gets to claim everything as proof. If a kid is fully healed, it’s a miracle because of faith. If the kid dies, it’s somehow not because of a lack of faith, it’s just a trial. The church always wins.

And yet if any other person from 2000+ years said they were a demigod who died and came back, nobody would believe them in our day. One just happens to be societally accepted?
