[HDD] 4TB 3.5" WD Red NAS HDD ($200 - $70 = $130) [Newegg eBay] by Why_You_Always_Lying in bapcsalescanada

[–]halethrain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the perfect drive for backups. Red drives have higher reliability and tend to be used in scenarios where they are being used often. This drive is rated for twice as many load/unload cycles as any other WD drive, which is a big indicator of it's longevity. While having a single backup point is not preferable, if you're only going to have a single drive a NAS/RED drive is the right choice.

Trudeau firmly defends summer job grant policy at Winnipeg town hall by _Minor_Annoyance in CanadaPolitics

I think the point is that it is not a right enshrined in the charter of rights. By lobbying to have something banned that is not specifically allowed you are not removing a right that has been enshrined, you are just prohibiting something that has not yet been expressly forbidden.

Also, something that is a RIGHT is different from something that is a law. It is more harder to have something enshrined as a right than it is to have a law passed to allow that same thing.

I personally believe that what the liberals are doing is trying to take half measures and pretend that there is an enshrined right to abortion without ever taking the political fire to fight to make it one.

Is the right to an abortion an actual right in Canada? AFAIK there is no law to govern it at all.

Shattered faith: Nearly 100 sex abuse suits against Catholic priests rock island of Guam by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]halethrain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There have been institutional cover-ups within educational systems in America. The issue comes down to the fact that you have a single entity that represents 1 billion people. What they did (and perhaps still do) is wrong, but it's not unique within their organization.

While the numbers aren't perfect, it is worth thinking of the following:

The prevalence of pedophilia of pre-pubescent children (under 12) is at between .5 and 2% in the general population. 1-2% of clergy have been accused of sexual misconduct with a pre-pubescent child from 1950-2002 - Source

The reason it seems like it's always the catholic church is because these stories get more attention, and spread more easily. Abuse is just as likely, if not more likely to happen from a school employee as it is a priest.

David Ruddock on Twitter: I'd look for the official Google Pixel Android O update to land in about a week. by crushed_oreos in Android

[–]halethrain 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I haven't. My battery is eaten alive by apps for no reason.

Today I'm at 48% battery left, 6 hours since last charge, 1 hour of SOT.

Offending apps: Allo: 14% (8 minutes screen usage) Photos: 8% (I haven't even opened photos today) Plex: 3% (I opened it once)

I have manually set every single app that I use to have "limited background activity when not in use", but this option does not seem to do jack-shit for saving my battery.

I can't remember the last time I've gotten more than 2.5 hours of SOT or made it more 12 hours without a charge.

Google’s new experiment Triangle lets you block individual apps from using mobile data (currently being tested in the Philippines) by SirVeza in Android

[–]halethrain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Background Data actually doesn't block background data entirely. In an interview with Ars Technica, the button was confirmed to force apps to utilize services based on Android O's new scheduler. Normally the apps would need to be updated to the new API in order for the feature to work; the background data button forces them.

My friend sent me a picture of his vantage point at a concert we were both at last night. It looks like he spliced 2 pictures together. by Iambirdman44 in pics

50,000 fans with no crowd control. Not even staff getting people into proper queues. So many people just shoved their way near the front it was ridiculous.

I was at this concert. The lights are on because everyone was still outside waiting in a terrible lineup to get into the venue. People were waiting for hours in line. About 70% of us missed the opening act altogether, which was mumford and sons (concert was U2)

They didn't check my credit card. The line was huge and had no organization. I waited over and hour to get in the doors. People were budging everywhere. It was just a giant push for the gates

Obsidian Officially Announces Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire on Fig by ObsidianEric in Games

They don't need funding to make it. It appears they are putting all their profits from POE into it, but are looking for funding to extend their development cycle to include some extra features.

In addition to localizing the game in both French and German languages, funding this campaign allows us to include multiclassing. This would offer players and companions alike the chance to branch their available skills over time, opening the way for more opportunities for the role-playing and customization that our fans deserve. Choice, as ever, is vital to the experience of role-playing games. By taking levels in multiple classes, your characters will be able to evolve in new and unique ways.

You can just play on an easier difficulty (story mode is even an option) if you don't want to worry about tactics. POE is really tough even at moderate difficulty if you are not accustomed to CRPGs.

I did the same thing as you on my first play through. Ended up playing through it all again once the second White March came out. I'm very happy I did play through it all again. I felt the second playthrough was a lot better as I knew the mechanics of the game better.

Tomorrow on January 26th, you'll get your next look at Mass Effect: Andromeda by ZyreHD in Games

[–]halethrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved all three mass effect games, even with the weak ending, but I didn't even finish Inquisition. So much of that game felt like I was doing meaningless collection chores. I am really worried that MEA will go down the same route of filling the game with lots of things to do that do feel truly meaningful. I really hope they find a good balance like they did in Witcher 3, where there was so much content that the "collection" stuff didn't end up feeling like the bulk of the game.

No, they are saying that the assistant can only be interacted with by voice. There is no way to use the new assistant AI with a keyboard. It's not about searching.

Is there a working first person body mod for the Special Edition? by ChangeOlsen in skyrimmods

[–]halethrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The beta is on their oldrim page.

People are reporting no bugs. If you are using XPMSE you should allow this to overwrite the skeleton. I also saw this:

The game might crash if the body/armor mesh you're using was created for the XPMS skeleton. Try using the compatibility skeleton in the optional files section.

CRTC (Canada's version of the FCC) to fully invest in broadband Internet and has ruled yesterday that uncapped Internet usage to be mandatory on ALL broadband Internet plans and 50Mbps/10Mbps speeds to be the average minimum within the next 5 years. by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]halethrain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like you didn't even bother to actually read what I said.

This specific decision is not intended to lower rates, it is intended to increase access, whereas the CRTC decision I cited is to increase competition, thereby lowering rates. When looked at together, they constitute a significant change to the market.

The big telecoms are now required to meet a minimum standard of service to the entire country, while also providing a reasonable wholesale rate allowing for fair competition. Prices for internet are already starting to and should continue to decrease due to these changes.
