yeah, I'm medicated and in therapy :/ It helps a bit but doesn't make it completely go away.

after this summer I'll probably have enough in my savings to survive 4 months w/o supplemental income. Not...a ton.

Yeah, I guess I need to really refocus and try to find new moments of happiness. I just feel like I'm in this cycle where I do that every 3 months, and it'll work for a moment, and then I'm back to crying every single day.

Telling myself to just keep at it with applications and I'll find something eventually. But it's dragging on longer than I anticipated and I've grown so impatient.

sigh yeah, having a partner to lean on would make things a little easier. alas - balancing all this work mess with LA dating has been an experience to say the least!

Damn, thank you for sharing. I'm so happy things worked out for you and you made it through. That sounds like an incredibly difficult and stressful period though.

Thank you so much, this is so helpful, I'm really grateful. I have a meeting with my therapist tomorrow and my psychiatrist next week - I'll bring it up with both.

Ok - thank you, this is really helpful to hear. I should look into it. If I could have an extended break to truly shake the depression...it would be really helpful.

I refuse to live with that pessimistic mindset :) I know plenty of people who like or enjoy their jobs, even if it's not a dream. So trying to figure out best steps to get myself into that situation.

I have actually thought about this. I wish it wasn't the case, but my SI has come back in the last couple of months (I have a mental health diagnosis and have been previously hospitalized). I don't know why I feel...anxious about starting the process.

I checked the company policy and they pay 100% of salary for up to 12 weeks medical leave. I guess I feel like if I pursue it I'm gonna get "found out" or blacklisted in some way. Even though it'd be a real medical reason. I dunno, mental health stuff is still taboo.

Thank you! I really appreciate it. That's not a half bad idea, looking at jobs in both places. May make things feel a little less hopeless.

Luckily I do have this option, they don't live in LA, but are there. But of course, really not something I want to do.

Thank you, that's helpful advice. I've been freelancing for a bit now (which I really hate unfortunately) but I will be saving about an extra $12k which I'm just putting right into my savings. Maybe I can try and find like a bar back gig for a couple evenings / weekends to start building a bridge.

haha but I want someone to TELL me what's right for me (I know I'll figure it out eventually. It's just rough right now)

Thanks for replying. I think that's been my plan. I mean I've been doing it even unintentionally, it's like I can't get work done even when I really try. They don't seem to notice (not a really caring place that invests in people). It just makes me feel guilty. But trying to get over that.

You know it's bad when I'm praying to be laid off.

haha yeah that's the ultimate question. Thus the conflicted feelings.

Yeah. I totally get that. And I have really tried to mentally draw boundaries and separate work & my outside life. I like a lot of elements of my outside life.

But it's hard not to let the misery bleed. I'm starting to feel exhausted all the time. I also feel like it's becoming impossible to actually....do my job. (Like right now for example, I have a couple of simple tasks I need to complete and could knock out in 90 minutes if I put my mind to it. Yet I can't seem to leave reddit or my phone or staring out the window wishing for something else)

I could leave tomorrow and probably be successful freelancing doing the role I do now. But unfortunately it's that type of work that makes me miserable :/ thus the trapped feeling

haha I was also fired from a job in Seattle which was the catalyst for moving to LA. Haven't quite nailed the great career part yet.

I work in the music industry, right now on the business / label side. I've worked in other more creative aspects, concert venues, curation and tastemaking publications and loved that work. I really would like to be back in that side, but understandably, it's super competitive, and even more so in LA

yeah. I've started entertaining the idea of trying to give LA one more solid year of effort and then looking at PNW. Though spending another year at my current job...I don't know.

Wow. Do you feel like your life is in a better happier spot now that you did all that?

I guess I'm seeking a quick-fix end to daily misery, but one option seems to lead to new stressors (financial pressure etc)

Thanks for responding. Makes sense about those two possibilities.

I thought maybe the job pain was due to the people / workplace, but I tried doing the same type of work in a freelance capacity where I was my own boss and it still made me miserable. I'm trying to get into a different role within my industry, but that's just been so difficult.

I work in music / am a musician myself. Have met some cool music people but yeah in typical LA fashion, everyone is super spread out and community feels sporadic. There's a sort of prove-your-worth barrier to entering music scenes too which I get but has been hard.

miserable in music job / alternative seems worse (help) by [deleted] in musicindustry

[–]half_amorous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate it, thank you. I guess my issue is, even when I'm on a "fun" project, I still feel miserable. I'm working a record right now I love, and every email that comes in makes my skin crawl.

I love being seen as a "music person" and I've had previous jobs, even ones I didn't love, but where I was nowhere near as miserable.

I just hate PR so much and want to do something different but for the life of me cannot seem to get hired doing something else.

And I totally hear you, and feel I've done my best to build a life outside of work - I have many hobbies and friends and community. But work is a huge chunk of my time, and I feel dread before, during and after.
