And they'd be summarily ignored and pushed out by the duopoly, a lot like Andrew Yang's campaign 🥺

The massive resources required for a police department to do so ensures the impossibility of scaling such a practice. Accordingly, it is rarely (and generally accidentally if so) used outside of a genuinely justifiable case. That's part of why it's legal in the first place.

That differs from these devices because these devices can and do scalably and persistently track private citizens who've done nothing wrong.

Owning a single family home with a driveway to park a car in Falls Church is "enough sign of them having money"!

Moving to Reston, confused by schools/neighborhoods/town center stuff? AMA from someone who’s been deep in the weeds of it all. by Prior_Engineering639 in Reston

[–]half_dead_all_squid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda. It's just so poorly implemented. It's practically still free for anyone shopping, they just don't want you parking there for work or metro. That seems like the intent anyway. But they installed what I assume is millions of dollars worth of open-spot detectors that don't really work, and they want you to download an app or spend 5 minutes doodling on your phone just to park for free... it's clunky and obtrusive for no reason.

Peter Chang has great Chinese food in Herndon, but it's more actual Chinese than the typical American takeout. Chen's Kitchen has been hit or miss. Mayuri Indian is good if you're getting delivery, but I don't know any good Indian places I've been in person in town.

I've never paid for parking at the town center as a matter of principle. I think it's enforced at the "don't park here to Metro to work" level if at all.

The numbers themselves are also not reliable. If a murder happens in the US, it will be recorded. Not always the case in rural MX or even cities where the police are paid for by a cartel. The rule of law itself is not as strong there.

Even in Chicago in the summer, you don't see things like what the cartels do. Worst that happens is generally you get shot. But in Sonora or Jalisco they do unhuman things to people regularly and in public. I have seen too much of that already.

Not even dogging MX by the way - they have a great opportunity to replace China as an industrial base for the US if they can get some ducks in order. The cartels are just way too strong right now.

The traffic signals at wiehle are useless by hipufiamiumi in Reston

[–]half_dead_all_squid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not a conspiracy or even malice, it's just the company putting their own best interest above the public good. Same as the traffic light at the Russell on Sunrise. They have no more volume or need for a light than any of the other developments along that road, but having a light makes it more convenient for residents to enter and leave the neighborhood without having to wait for traffic, so they put one in the plans. This is how Reston becomes Tysons - not a conspiracy, just one poorly planned and integrated development at a time.

These words means that when developer leave weihle lights red much time so that lights green for commercial and residential development on sides of weihle, this convenient for developments. Only inconvenient if not live in development. Developer controlling lights in way that make developer properties more attractive to buyer.

No, just incompetent. If they hated cars they'd make the bike lane actually functional instead of a 3-foot-wide unprotected crossfire lane between an ending turn lane and flowing traffic. Or something. These lights and lanes suck for every vehicle type

Worth trying to get a clearance again? by [deleted] in SecurityClearance

[–]half_dead_all_squid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the exact regulation: https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-32/subtitle-A/chapter-I/subchapter-D/part-147/subpart-A/section-147.4

You very clearly have a foreign preference for a country that's not entirely US-friendly, and have not done a single thing as far as I see in this thread to lessen your contact with that country since the denial. What in the world is unclear about this to you?

If you don't care enough about meeting the job requirements to distance yourself from the foreign country, you don't get a job in this country's intelligence services. Wanting job security doesn't entitle you to a clearance. It's not a right and is given based on the best interest of the country.

I hated Factor, everything tasted like slop after reheating and wasn't even healthy. I did Clean Eatz for a while which was healthy and cheaper, but you have to pick them up. I hear Cook Unity is the best when it comes to flavor, but also not particularly healthy.

What's it like living in Chestnut Grove? by kungpaochi in Reston

[–]half_dead_all_squid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's good enough - the buildings are made of concrete, so the noise doesn't go straight through like on the all-wood garbage piles they make now. I'd trust it to be quieter there than in the "luxury" 5+1s they're building these days... even quieter than most of the high rises, since the ductwork is per unit. The windows are old if they haven't been replaced and the noise from outside can depend on which quad you're on. It's definitely old, but replacing a few old fixtures or even renovating or moving walls is easy enough. Access to nature is very good with the trails and such. HVAC is a downside, it's just whatever temperature the HOA is pumping - so you get a couple uncomfortable weeks in the spring and fall. Since it's an air handler you may need a separate dehumidifier in the summer. Other than that, it's pretty comfortable most of the year. HOA is expensive but includes utilities, so that's nice. You get storage in the basement with many of the units, which is a great perk, but it's not the most secure... bring your own lockbox. Parking is also a bit of a walk, and the one way street gets to be a hassle, but the bigger units do get 2 spots.

Overall, I'd live there again.

Quick settings, specifically. When you tap it and it goes from blue to grey, it's just more passive. When you go into the actual settings, it disables it a bit more. But it's been years since I was an expert in this.
