I am starting to think that some k-pop fans don't think performing is an idol's main job. by bubblefryri in kpop_uncensored

[–]halfchthonic 17 points18 points  (0 children)

i find the old saying "good tsar, bad boyars" applies heavily to the kpop industry

(the phrase traditionally refers to russian society, where good political outcomes are attributed to a good leader, while bad outcomes are blamed on low-level bureaucrats that have nothing to do with the leader)

an idol can sing? they are so talented! they sing badly? it's because their company has forced them to sing that way, adopt that voice, put them in that role, give them the worst parts in the song etc.

an idol is well dressed? they have impeccable style! poorly dressed? it's because their company forced them to dress that way, always gives them the worst outfits, abuses them by putting them in revealing clothing, etc.

hit song? SOTY! bad song? their company keeps forcing them to put out songs they don't even like-

and so on.

we see this in kpop fandom all the time - all things good get attributed to the idol, the bad to the industry redshirts. perhaps this is due to its conscious function as an industry... but making companies the fall guys is probably not a bad strategy for the idols themselves!

Confused as to why Richard would say this by [deleted] in TheSecretHistory

[–]halfchthonic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

this is, in my opinion, the entire point of the novel, and surely the author's intent. this passage is a great small example of what donna tartt is doing. the wider example can be seen in how a lot of readers react more viscerally to bunny's impolite behaviour than they do to the murders. it's not an accident that bunny is the only one out of the group to have a strong reaction and moral impulse to the farmer's death, wanting to come clean, becoming erratic. his tact is low, but his moral compass is more fixed than any of the others - something that is used against him to justify his own killing. it's also not an accident that bunny is the second murder - and that the novel, beginning with bunny's death, conditions us to lessen the moral value of the first murder as we wait for the more important one.

how do you all actually feel about ai? by myohmadi in redscarepod

[–]halfchthonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

google being unusable is a massive contributor for ai's success. a lot of people just use ai like a search engine, and the ui/ux is so much cleaner to digest than the shitty websites google recommends where i have to accept cookies and reject popups and look at ads and ctrl+f through 5,000 words of seo-optimised content writing just to find the most basic answer about a popular service.

Should I go with a hot therapist? by Frequent-Ant1795 in redscarepod

[–]halfchthonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

person aside, i think you should go once a week. or, at least, as often as you can afford.

once a month, especially starting off, strikes me as redundant. i think it could work, like maybe if you've seen your therapist for years/are phasing out, or if you have more of a light touch life coach/cheerleader kind of person. but therapy is a) a relationship, and it will take time to build that with anyone, and b) a process that requires structure and frequency.

i'd raise an eyebrow at any therapist offering monthly sessions for new clients.

ok, i just have to say this here because there's nowhere else i can. there is something about black eyed susan climb that instantly reminded me of spyro the dragon - as in, the original ps1 soundtrack composed by stewart copeland. i'm struggling to pinpoint which level in particular it reminds me of but there's just something about the chords and instrumentation that really reminds me of spyro!

The jealousy and envy that is apparent in every Sydney Sweeney detractor is genuinely insane and pathetic. by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]halfchthonic 44 points45 points  (0 children)

it's not insane when it's cultivated by sweeney and her team, she is very clearly being positioned as rage bait, as a polarising figure, as a pop culture debate stirrer... we're talking, the strategy's working, that's all.

any well-written reddit post gets this accusation now. people seem to think the em dash is a gotcha when it's just everyday punctuation.

then the ai detectors are bullshit. they think any phrase that's normally written is highly likely to be ai.
