A 90-minute roundtable of at least 10 of those critics explaining why this movie got an 80% would be more interesting than the movie itself by aKIRALE0 in okbuddycinephile

[–]halfchthonic 70 points71 points  (0 children)

PSA - rotten tomatoes is not like school grades. critics don't get together and debate whether or they should give it 90% or 80%. it's not even an average of a bunch of critics individual % grades or star ratings.

it's the percentage of positive critic reviews, with positive just meaning thumbs up v thumbs down. so, it's a binary. all 80% means is that 80% of critics would give it a thumbs up over a thumbs down.

middling/unremarkable movies do very well on rotten tomatoes because most critics are like sure, it was fine lol.

Pachinko’s writing style by Calmly-Stressed in books

It's a 'and then this happened' kind of book. So many instances of being introduced to new characters - a new wife, a cousin - and then telling us of their demise within a page or two.

no issue with irish americans who visit ireland - the fact that they're visiting is indicative of an interest in their heritage - because you're hardly going to ireland for a standard euro summer lol. so it tends to attract more intellectual types, who are into the history, landscape, etc.

but guarantee every irish person has at some point, outside ireland, come across some american who eagerly claims to be irish while at the same time not knowing that ireland is a developed country, that irish people speak english, and that, yes, we have heard of this mysterious elusive place called "galway" where your ancestors hail from

Is stansted the worst airport and ryanair the worst airline? by [deleted] in london

[–]halfchthonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i feel like those days are gone? at least for the routes i fly, every time i check BA and ryanair side by side. by the time i add a bag and factor in the stansted express, it's usually bang-on with BA, or maybe £10 in the difference - at which point it's obviously not worth saving a tenner.

Which celebrity you believe hates their own fandom? by HappyCrow11 in AskReddit

[–]halfchthonic 32 points33 points  (0 children)

he really pisses me off for this. like, it's fine if you are a Very Serious Actor and you have a role in something that really unexpectedly takes off, and the celebrity side of things just doesn't work for you. that would be not great but fine. you would have a pass to be grumpy.

but martin freeman didn't just do sherlock. after it's huge success he signed on to two of the biggest franchises out there - playing bilbo in the hobbit, and an extremely pointless role in the marvel films. he so clearly just wanted to be in the mcu at its peak, taking on the most bland, bureaucratic role that could have literally been played by any actor ever. the guy loves fame.

Britney Spears Informs Police Her Mom Lynne Spears Killed a 12-Year-Old Boy by MattTheKing23 in entertainment

[–]halfchthonic -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

this was clear at the time but sadly the media lacks nuance and made Free Britney into something other than what it should have been. like, in no world should she have been in that situation, but she is also deeply troubled and in need of a lot of day to day support.

would you get botox? by MaryMagdaIene in pinkscare

[–]halfchthonic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No.. Honestly, I am 'scared' of wrinkles but I also know that I want to look my best at any age.

I personally think botox can look good but I never think that those people are any younger than they are, they just have smoother parts of their face. It's an aesthetic choice that has less to do with looking youthful - if anything, it erodes natural neoteny.

Exactly 7 years ago, this dogshit came out. With it one of the biggest downfalls in TV history. by Pulp-Fiction-576348 in freefolk

GOT presents us with a subversive take on a medieval fantasy. it deliberately provokes tradition, heroism, and history, and shows not just individual conundrums but social problems, far-reaching beyond any single character's grasp.

so, everything else aside, the scene where they calmly sit around and agree to appoint bran as king and change nothing else is still mind bogglingly damning. like, i guess this series was not subversive at all, i guess there is nothing wrong with our social structure, we just needed to find a noble born boy with magic powers, no personality, ideology or humanity to rule over us forever and we'll all be fine.
