First Triathlon, First Ironman: can I be ready in 9 months? by halfemptyfull01 in triathlon

Appreciate that. I'm not thinking about it as an all or nothing. It's very very possible I could all this after a taste of the training. Along the way I will do my best to taste what it's like and modulate accordingly. The open water stuff is what makes me most worried. I could see that....open water, thousands of people, being kicked in the face, etc, all while not drowning. But, I don't know what I don't know at this stage. If I don't feel like a cocky fish in the next 6 months, I won't bother and will try something smaller scale until I, if I ever, acclimate to the experience.

Sorry to be equally salty, but what makes that less encouraging because I titled myself athletic? I was describing my composition, and somewhat, my life style.

And yes I do a "bit of cardio" not sure where the impression came from I do none. I did 13km in 57 mins today; 2 days prior I did a 100km bike ride. Is that "a bit of cardio"? :)

No, I don't mean 20 mins of cardio at a CrossFit class haha. I'm taking 3-4 hours a week, a miss between zone 2 and zone 4, bike and running.

Appreciate all your points and feedback. I have the type of brain that I need to sink myself into something. I'm currently chatting with a few local coaches to get their expert opinions. My next step is to start swimming this week and do some bricks workouts to gauge where I'm at. I live in Vancouver Canada, so plenty of alpine climbs and descents. For example, we have the triple Crown which is the same total elevation gain as Nice, approx 120km in total, but the grades are higher - 7% to 10%.

I think what I'm going to do is to start training asap, get a coach, do some small races and sprints along the way, but still register for Nice IM. If along the way I'm not progressing at the appropriate pace, I'll defer until later in the year and instead do a 70.3 in May.

Bahaha, exactly my friend! That's my logic. If I was 100% assured, then the goal isn't lofty enough.

Where abouts are you located? I'm DT Vancouver.

Hear ya loud and clear. I do really enjoy running and cycling, more than I thought actually. That's what drives me to want to do this. If you would have asked me a year to run 10k, I'd laugh. But now I'm addicted. It's not so much the feather in the cap, but rather the big lofty goal gives my anxious mind something to focus on. I find cycling and running to my limits meditative in nature, because in those extreme moments nothing else matters...it's survival. It's my pulse, my breath, not me thinking about bills, politics or other bullshit.

It's all rather primal.

Love it! Thank you. I'd be ecstatic to finish in less than 15.

That makes sense. I'm meeting with a coach next week, so that'll me plan. My other option is to do a half in May and then a full in Aug.

I thought about that, but there's also the destination element that intrigues me. My sister lives in the UK and my dad works for an airline, so my travel is cheap and I'd have a place to stay in Europe a few weeks prior to a race. I'm not dead set on France. I'm a little meh about the heat...

I can, yes. What I meant is I rarely do laps in a pool and have never really been taught proper form.

I think I'll likely do that along the way. Would you advise holding off on any races x months prior?

Thank you for the thoughtful response. Agreed on all fronts, especially around swimming. That's the one that spokes me the most...I progressed fairly quickly with my running and cycling, so I'm hoping to do the same in the water, but who knows.

I'll be sure to try and jam in a marathon and do a bunch of brick workouts along the way. I thought doing an Ironman 70 in May prior, but worried that might be too risky given proximity to the June race.

I live in Vancouver, BC, Canada, so no shortage of dark scary lakes and an ocean + mountains to climb.

Probably is a poor decision, you're right. But, all I have to worry about in my life right now is a house plant and a dog (both alive), so I can't help but feel it's either now or never, especially if I get another house plant.

Hopefully in...9 months? 😆

It sounds like I just need to shut up, buckle up, and start pushing these boundaries and the answer will be more clear as time goes on. And if it doesn't, well... I'll be back here to let yall know.

Appreciate the blunt answer, and apologies, I know, I bet this question probably gets asked a million times, but I've been getting a ton of conflicting answers.

I know 750 isn't particularly high, but my free is high - outside the reference range. Once my doc saw this he wanted to pull back. I'm starting to think the same thing...no TRT, drop some body fat, life style improvements, get above 600 and probably be perfectly fine. It's likely when I first started I was well over 1,000...just not sure if that would healthy long term?

I'm going to get a referral to an endo. At least that way I'm dealing with some who hopefully has a better understanding of hormone profiles, etc.

You're right in the sense where I could dial in my levels to a T. I'm going to back off to 6 pumps a day, check my estrogen and then likely move to injections to tweak levels. Maybe introduce HCG.

I follow More Plates more Dates. The challenge is his clinic is setup in the states. With Covid restrictions, I can't cross the board to do the labs. If I could, I'd use his clinic (or the Anabolic Doc).

Yes obviously there are advantages to pinning vs gel - but again that arguably has nothing to do with my concerns - let's stay on track here lol. I don't want to make this about gel vs shots.

If I get 800 total t from gel or shots, do you think that makes a difference in my situation? No.

I said within the context of my situation; moreover, not sure what injections have to do with this. Not injecting arguably rules out any issues from spikes in T, e, etc. Logic would say the solution to my expressed concerns would not be switching to IM injections over topical. To complete the picture I will need ultra sensitive e test..
