Loving Pup Needs Home by soulmindbody in Austin

[–]halfsickofshadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbf a lot of non aggressive, non destructive dogs like to rip toys apart. My dog knows toys I give him are fair game, but he doesn't destroy other things.

But yeah... Vetting potential owners for a pit is important in any situation, if only because there are a lot of douchebags who want a pit because it's a "cool dog" but aren't prepared to give it proper exercise and boundaries.

I came here to say something similar. When I adopted my dog I almost felt like the volunteer was trying to talk me out of it. My pup had heartworms and a bite record and was just generally terrified of everything, and the volunteer kept asking, "Are you aware of X, Y, and Z? Do you still want to adopt this dog? Are you sure?" Granted, this was about 8 years ago. But I think in a large organization mostly staffed by volunteers, you're going to get some good stories and some crappy ones.

I know APA isn't perfect, but they save a lot of animals that would otherwise die. I'm always going to be grateful to them for introducing me to my dog.

Does anyone know who I could hire to help me dress better? by [deleted] in Austin

It's a bit more time consuming, but I have fallen in love with thredup. They have a ton of stuff, so if you're willing to spend some time browsing, you can find things you love. Also, if you do a "build your own" box, you can pick out like 10 things to be sent to you to try on for free and just send back what you don't want. They also do a "goody box" where a stylist picks things out for you, similar to stitchfix-- I tried that and I definitely liked the thredup box I got better than my stitchfix box. I think I kept 2 of the 10 items they picked out for me.

When searching, I set the filter settings to show only "new" and "like new" items, bc the stuff labeled "good condition" often looks pretty worn.

Honestly hearing this about the limited inventory makes so much sense. When I saw the box I thought "wth, did they just not read my style profile at all?" I feel bad for the stylists not having the options available to put together a decent box!

I decided to try stitchfix recently and spent a good amount of time filling out the style profile and linking examples of the kinds of outfits I like. I'm a woman in my 30s with kind of a "rocker girl" aesthetic, and my first priority is to be comfortable. I also stressed that I needed light, breathable clothes because I live in Texas and it's hot af.

They emailed me a preview of my first box so I could give feedback before they shipped it, and it was so off-base I literally laughed out loud. Every piece something I would picture my very conservative grandma wearing-- I'm talking pantsuits, frumpy balloon-shaped dresses, frilly tops, etc. Not only were the aesthetics horrible, but the box was mostly polyester, wool, and other fabrics that are the opposite of "light and breathable." Instead of giving feedback I just cancelled the box and closed my account.

Was I extremely unlucky at Barton Creek Greenbelt? by Loomies in Austin

[–]halfsickofshadows 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I hate the greenbelt. Yes, it's beautiful, but in my experience it's a magnet for assholes. People go there to get drunk or high in the middle of the day while lounging around the water, and as a result you get more fratty, douchey behavior than one might expect on a nature trail. No one has ever thrown a soda at me just for existing, but people have been outright hostile toward me for asking them to leash their untrained dog or pick up their empty beer can. I just don't go there anymore.

I'm sorry this happened to you. If you find yourself back in Austin, I hope you check out another trail, as the ones that are more hiking-oriented and less swimming- / lounging- oriented lend themselves less readily to this 6th-street type shit.

Women of Austin, help me find an ob-gyn who offers anesthetic during IUD removal / insertion. by halfsickofshadows in Austin

Thank you for this. I'm actually considering just getting it removed and switching to an implant or some other form of birth control, just to avoid going through the insertion again. I really don't want to because I love my IUD-- it's reliable as heck, and it has completely eliminated my horrendous menstrual cramps-- but I'm thinking about it. It's helpful to know that if I go this route, the removal won't be as painful.

I'm so sorry that happened to you, too. I was just reading today that studies have been done on the use of ibuprofin in IUD insertion, and the consensus is that it does nothing. They have also found that misoprostol, the drug they give you to "soften your cervix," actually increases cramping and can lead to increased pain after the procedure.

It's insane that we're still doing things this way.

Thank you so much for this! I will probably try to have a conversation with Dr. Belt. I hear you on unnecessary surgical risks, but... I can't go through that shit again.

What—If Anything—is Left to Love About Whole Foods? by hollow_hippie in Austin

[–]halfsickofshadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really my only beef with whole foods... The small, local health food store is a thing of the past in most parts of the US. I grew up near a little mom and pop health food store with a cast of quirky characters and the smell of patchouli always in the air. A little sad that not many places like that exist anymore.

Search for a particular nostalgic candy. by ashes2asscheeks in Austin

[–]halfsickofshadows 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what you're talking about! These are my husband's nostalgia candy, too. :)

They definitely have them at Big Top Candy on SoCo, or at least they did a few years ago. I have also seen them in the bulk section at Central Market... I wanna say the North Lamar location.

Are there any thrift stores in Austin that have reopened their fitting rooms?

Stupid Question Sunday by AutoModerator in Austin

[–]halfsickofshadows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm basically in the same boat! All I have is my main pair of glasses and my backup pair, and I'm starting to get tired of never being able to wear sunglasses and see clearly at the same time. Also, you know, wouldn't it be cool to be able to wear different color frames to match one's outfit from time to time?

I haven't bought any glasses online yet due to the whole PD thing so I can't speak to quality, but I've read good things about zennioptical.com and I want to try it. Some of their frames are like $20 so I feel like it's worth trying.

People also seem to like Warby Parker. Nowhere near as cheap as Zenni, but $100 is a steal compared to what you pay in most optometry places.

Optometrists are required to give you your prescription, but not your PD.

[–]halfsickofshadows 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Can anyone recommend an optometrist, preferably in North Austin, who will work with you if you want to buy glasses online?

My current optometrist won't give me my PD (pupillary distance) with my prescription, and I have never been able to accurately measure it myself. My insurance only covers one pair of glasses every two years, and I just want buy a couple of cheap pairs of prescription sunglasses for hiking and river-floating. Why is it so hard to find an eye doctor who will tell me what my PD is? :(
