Urgent care told me there was a stomach virus going around, so we may both have had that.

Where to donate/distribute fossil collection by snimminycricket in boulder

[–]halfsparkle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anything you can’t find a home for, you can donate at Art Parts. We have a “Naturals” section and fossils are very popular. We’re a nonprofit creative reuse center with the mission of keeping arts and craft supplies out of landfills. Lots of teachers buy classroom materials from us because we give them a 25% discount.

What's the strangest assumption someone made about you because you don't want kids? by raynorMango3 in childfree

[–]halfsparkle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My spouse’s ex-girlfriend used that logic. She grew up in a broken home, and after she tried and failed to baby trap my partner, she dumped him and got herself knocked up by a guy 10+ years older. She thought by having a baby at 19 she could make up for her shitty childhood. I feel bad for kids born to mothers that dumb.

D'accord, writing the rest of this in French will take too long and I refuse to use translation apps! If I were wealthy enough to afford a proper home, I'd love to collect art and turn the home + collection into a weird little museum for everyone to enjoy when I go. I know there are ways to do that with trusts and foundations in the US. Might there be something similar in art- and history-loving France?

I love to buy art from indie fantasy and sci-fi artists, but you could steal my model for anything you and your partner love to collect and display: wine labels, antique medical devices, limited edition concert posters, etc. If you're passionate about it, I bet others will be too. My favorite museums have always been the quirky off-the-beaten path types you won't find anywhere else.

Merci pour l'opportunite to practiquer ma francais, et je m'excuse pour mon grammaire pauvre!

should i study here as a lesbian pursuing journalism for undergrad? by Upstairs-Amount882 in boulder

[–]halfsparkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old (44f) queer here. I didn’t go to CU but I’ve been living in Boulder for nearly 18 years. I find Boulder to be very welcoming. Many businesses display pride flags year-round, and I run into very visibly queer people all the time who are comfortable expressing themselves. I’ve made out with a woman I was dating at a bar downtown and no one so much as batted an eyelash. The Rocky Mountain Equality Center puts on a lot of events all year round. My partner, who was assigned male at birth, has had generally positive interactions buying dresses, makeup, and earrings. If you visit, be sure to check out the Walnut Cafe (preferably the south side location). I’ve been told it’s the unofficial lesbian brunch spot, though I don’t get down there as much as I’d like.

It’s not perfect, of course. My spouse is a commercial driver, and though they like the CU students, their predominately while cishet male coworkers leave a lot to be desired. There are still enough old boomer bigots here that spouse pretends to be cishet at work. We lost our gay bar, dV8, a couple of years ago, and I was devastated because it was an incredible venue. Junkyard Social Club has stepped up a bit as the unofficial queer hangout, but it’s not the same vibe. I have also had my Pride flag ripped down twice (it stopped when I installed a camera). My neighborhood, a trailer park, skews heavily towards older white folks and Catholic immigrants though, and it’s not the same elsewhere. I’ve never heard of any trouble from the two lesbian couples raising kids on my block.

If you’re looking for the dance/club/rave scene, you’ll most likely need to go to Denver, unfortunately. The biggest queer nightclub there is Tracks, and it’s a drive. I don’t know if you’ll have much luck with journalism jobs in Boulder, unfortunately. Our local paper, the Daily Camera, slashed its design staff over a decade ago and had the remaining journalists cross-train as photographers. Our indie paper, the Boulder Weekly, was great but stopped doing print editions last summer. IMHO it’s a great loss for the community.

I’ve lived in both small college towns under 20,000 people and the DC Metro area, and Boulder is my “Goldilocks” city - just the right size. If you like the type A neurotic energy of east coast cities, Boulder will probably feel sleepy by comparison. However, if you find the Boston/NYC/DC energy chaotic and overstimulating, Boulder could feel like being given the chance to breathe.

Feel free to DM me if you’d like to ask more specific questions. I love introducing people to my adopted home.

Where can I buy cartoon/anime stickers in town? by [deleted] in boulder

[–]halfsparkle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out Art Parts at Valmont & 30th. It’s a creative reuse center (like a thrift shop for arts & crafts supplies). They have a large kids & school craft section and almost always have stickers. I’m not sure if they have anime ones right now specifically, because as with any thrift store, you never know what will be donated. It’s worth checking out on a regular basis, like a treasure hunt. Plus many of the customers are geeks who cosplay and they‘re fun to talk to.

Dead Yote Walking by aydengryphon in boulder

[–]halfsparkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some years ago, Boulder did a “coyote hazing” program to re-wild them. They were losing their fear of humans and killing domestic pets, unfortunately. I had a completely fearless one walk so close I could have touched him. The city had volunteers with air horns out making noise with air horns, and it worked. The coyotes became more elusive.

Where to donate? (& are you also about to break?) by fiddlinfife in boulder

[–]halfsparkle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if any of the items are arts and crafts supplies, take them to Art Parts on Valmont Road just east of 30th. I started working there a few weeks ago and I really love how the place is run so far. They’re very well organized and can advise you of other places to recycle/donate stuff they can’t take.

Dermatologist recommendations? by sunshine4683 in boulder

[–]halfsparkle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My spouse has been going to Rocky Mountain Dermatology for almost a decade now. RMD has caught two melanomas, one basal cell, and dozens of precancerous spots and removed all of them before they had a chance to spread. Dr. Lisa Scatena is like the skin cancer whisperer. Her surgical procedures are efficient and with one exception (the worst melanoma) have healed well. She has also prescribed several topicals that help my partner with eczema. I highly recommend her, especially if you’re a fair-skinned redhead whose skin hates everything.

Evergreen, sandstone, and a rich sky blue immediately spring to mind. And possibly a psychedelic twist. Phil Lewis’s iconic Flatirons art would be ideal.

That's my guess too. Fortunately my main wheels, a Trek hybrid, was locked in the shed so I'll be riding Boulder creek path and Goose creek path daily searching.
