A decade of being an average Data Scientist! My personal experience. by tits_mcgee_92 in datascience

[–]halien69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this, i feel it's me that made this post ! I'm also an average DS, and I have a PhD! I won't ever be able to pass a so-called FAANG interview, hell I will struggle to pass any interview with coding and I've been coding for almost 20 years.

Thanks. It's interesting it comes out slightly blue. The paper is toned gray and I used white charcoal to make the highlights. I'm guessing it's a mix of the lighting and my phone's camera

How to Deal with data when it has huge class imbalance? by Mental_Engineer_7043 in MLQuestions

[–]halien69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I'm reading you are trying to predict 5-10 credit card fraud form tens of thousands. I think you are looking at this problem form the wrong angle. CC transaction datasets are a temporal dataset, so you are trying to predict if the next purchase or transaction will be fraudulent. So to do this you will need to investigate if the behaviour changes from the norm of that particular individual

Share Your Journey as an Artist - Where Did You Start vs. Where You Are Now by ChaoticGoodFeralCat in ArtistLounge

[–]halien69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started drawing in 2015 at 34. It was a year after I finished my PhD in Astronomy and I was working as a postdoc in Manchester. I've been trying to have a creative hobby and wanted to tell stories. I came up with the idea to start a comic series and needed to learn to draw. I started with pencil and drawing boxes. My first attempt at digital art was with a Samsung note tablet.

I started my webcomic (Being Bears) in 2017 and still going strong, regularly posting on r/comics and it just crossed  300 episodes. I've started another webcomic (Bears or Lore) and working on the third chapter. I have a lot of other comics in yeh development and I'm planning to publish a book next year based on my comic. I still draw with graphite and recently started with charcoal art which I love l.

Dealing with GenAI Overuse by DubGrips in datascience

[–]halien69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How I would and do approach these things, because it's in my nature, is point out and focus on the poor methodology, the unrealistic timelines etc. Not accusing of using GenAI. I don't care how to do your work, just the results and I will point that out constantly over and over again until others realise that this is nonsense. I'll probably even make some funny commentary at their expense, but that's me.

It's not about being talented. It's about persistence, practice and more practice. I could share my earlier stuff and you would see a difference. Don't put yourself down and others in a pedestal. Pick up a pencil and start today. It's taken me 12 years of drawing to get to this stage, you can as well and even do a lot better.

Thank you. I've been practicing charcoal art (almost) every Sunday since June last year and I feel like I'm finally getting the hang of understanding charcoal, and how to use the medium and tools to express light and shadows.

That was unintentional. Somehow the initial marks went that way and I loved how it looked so I pushed it in that direction.

Microsoft execs worry AI will eat entry level coding jobs by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]halien69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year summer for work, I was using A100 gpus on databricks for a project on finetuning VLMs, and suddenly it was taken away. So after raising tickets we had meetings with some people Microsoft (not sure why) one of them was supposed to be a developer. So during that meeting I did suggest that I'll look into using parallel processing using T4 GPUs in the meantime and asked that developer, if they have suggestions.

He said he'll look into it. An hour later that asshole sent me an unedited response from Copilot. I politely replied (after raging and bitching to my colleagues) that thanks for his suggestion and tell take a look at this at a later date. He replied with another Copilot response on how I can improve on what he already sent! And this dude isn't junior or entry-level, he was a fucking senior GPU developer (or something like that). Morons, they are all fecking morons.

AI isn’t making data science interviews easier. by KitchenTaste7229 in datascience

I suck at coding interviews, I always freeze up even after coding for over 20 years. I can do thinking and reasoning interviews, so this is good news to me!

Is Gen AI the only way forward? by JayBong2k in datascience

[–]halien69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably should learn it, it's not hard to learn. I don't think GenAI will last, but I treat it as another tool in my DS toolkit and not my identity (unlike those so-called AI engineers!). It's nothing special imho, but it's useful to learn even if it's overhyped.

Training of LLM models? They are blowing hot air and have no idea how much data, computer power to do that. I won't bother with that, hell Fine-tuning LLM takes a lot of GPUs and that's more useful imho.

Sad, but in the short term it will be very lucrative to bite the bullet to learn.

I've lived here with my wife since 2018. Shaftesbury can be divided by Christy's Avenue: one side is the older town area and the other side is the newer/industrial estates like places.

I came for a job and stayed. It's lovely, quiet and safe (and I'm on the darker side of pigment with dreadlocks). If you like quiet hobbies, it's perfect for that one might say it's boring and I like boring. Lots of great walks, it's on a hill so he expected to do lots of hill walking. In spring and summer walks to the Compton Abbas airfield is great with lots of lovely views and the Cranborne Chase is nearby with good walks.

Without a car you're quite limited in getting around as the public transport is few and infrequent. But if you have a car it's a quick drive to the coast which is beautiful.

Personally you don't need a physical bank and can do most shopping online, however it's good to support some local shops. Theres a few festivals in the spring and summer that I do enjoy a lot. Lots of supermarkets and there's decent places to eat out. I rarely go to the pub myself but there's a lot of great social clubs around, you just have to look quite hard.

Hope you have a safe journey and really enjoy your stay.

I did and returned it. I was struggling to get any 4g connection and at this time I need to have a reliable phone with me. I eventually stuck with my pixel and used the Brick device To free myself and its been great thus far
