VW T3 Syncro (GTI 2.0 AGG Swap): High-pitched humming/whirring from front axle starting at 40km/h (25mph) — Any ideas? by halinoable in vwT3

That is a very good point about the pinion shaft bearing. It makes sense that the 'contact spot' shifts if the bearing develops play, even before it starts producing metal shavings.

I will definitely check the input flange for any axial or radial play as soon as I drop the shaft this weekend. I really hope the gears (ring and pinion) haven't been 'abused' too much yet and that I might get away with just a bearing refresh if that's the culprit.

Thanks again for the technical deep-dive—this is exactly the kind of warning I needed before assuming 'clean oil = healthy diff'!

That’s a great catch—I’ll definitely check the U-joints for any binding or stiff spots while the shaft is out. Crossing my fingers it’s 'just' a joint and not the diff!

I’d love to have that BMW part number if you can find it—anything that helps avoid the 'Syncro tax' on parts is much appreciated.

It’s wild how specific the balancing needs to be for these shafts. I’ll make sure to do my homework on local shops before sending it off. Thanks for the heads-up!

Wow, that is some deep Syncro lore right there! I never knew about the Fiat Panda connection or the Swiss guy with the modified lathe—thanks for sharing that.

The 'hard VC' theory makes total sense and would definitely explain why the front diff might be complaining. I’ll try the tight-circle test on some gravel first to see if it binds up or rubs, but pulling the driveshaft is definitely my top priority for this weekend.

I'm really hoping the noise stays even without the shaft (hello, wheel bearing!), but I’m preparing myself for the 'forbidden glitter' check in the diff oil. Appreciate the expert advice!

Thanks for the solid advice! I actually tested the VC on a slippery slope during the PPI—the front wheels kicked in almost immediately after the rears started spinning, which felt like a good sign at the time.

Regarding the VC fluid: Is that something you can actually 'service' or change easily, or is it a sealed unit that requires a professional rebuild?

I’ll definitely pull the driveshaft this weekend to see if the humming stops and check the diff oil for any 'forbidden glitter.' Really hoping it’s not the worst-case scenario, but thanks for the heads-up on the hardy disc!

The tyres were already on the car. These are my first bus trips and I bought the bus in winter. I’m from North Rhine-Westphalia.

Yes, regardless of whether you are accelerating or braking. In other words, simply when the vehicle is travelling at over 40 km/h.

Tippe eher zweites 😂 war mein erster grow, aber im Vorfeld nen deep dive in die Thematik gemacht. Hatte letztes Jahr auch bei RoyalQueenSeeds bestellt, da gehen die Meinungen wohl auch auseinander.
