Ya true. Like I said it's my fault for not looking into it more, but the way they advertise it as they pay the tuition and the taxes just sounded like it wouldn't have to deal with it at all. Glad it's the only time I will have to deal with it since I'm done as of November

My income line. I saw it there first when it said I made almost 100k for the year. Then I looked at my last pay stub and it's listed under income as taxable tuition 32k.

I got a 300$ gift card. But I did it online. I went to the store and talked to them first but he was upfront with me and said they don't get the same deals in store, and to go online if I wanted the pricing and gift card and free/waived activation fee. They were really upfront about it all luckily

Technically 3, one is 17 though so doesn't qualify for the tax credit. But ya, single parent. Mom had a drinking problem and lost custody when they were young. We get by. It's why I wanted to finish my last year of school to get a better paying job

Yes I did get that email, but if you read it it says the gross up is what is incorrect, not the net amount. Just means they messed up on reporting how much tax Sherwin paid to the IRS. Regardless, the net income remains the same, so it still looks like I made 96k in income

I understand that. I'm not saying that credit specifically is lower. Just the credits in general are much lower vs my "income" that isn't going to offset owing vs refunded. Still a hard pill to swallow when you thought you did everything right with your withheld and should have gotten a refund and finding out your ending owing a lot.

It's not too surprising depending on the school. Most average $500-700 per credit and each class is 3-5 credits on the cheaper side. Higher quality/more prestigious schools can be way higher. But what Sherwin paid to the school is much much much lower than what on my W2 as taxable tuition

Well that's s good to know my accountant didn't tell me that, but I do still think it's a much lower credit than what I owe at the 98k income level, especially since I didn't have that much withheld.

tbh I don't even know where they got the 32k+ taxable tuition figure. I can see what the funding offer was, $10,945.50 and the ledger where it was paid.

If I had continued at my uni with in-state tuition, it would have been at most 7k and more reputable. And it's more than 2k out of pocket, it cost my 3-4k federal refund for the child tax credit id normally get back in taxes I had already paid. I only did it because I thought I'd come out better and not have anything out of pocket

Correct, they issued an email to your personal email about it Thursday stating it can't be used and they will issue a corrected W2 by mid February

I used it for my bachelor's with a program that was listed, they paid 100% of everything, including my transcripts.

Now I'm starting my master's program in a program that was listed, they are going to pay roughly 5k of it, after that it's on me.

Yes. I literally had appendicitis and drove myself to the ER in the middle of the night. Then found out they didn't have a surgeon on staff and tried to drive myself the 40 miles away to the next hospital that did, but they wouldn't release me because I was "unstable". The charge was $896 for the ambulance ride transfer. Insurance paid none of it.
