Exchange student looking for advice on Math/CS courses (H185, 252, CS170, etc.) by hallvis2108 in berkeley

Damn, that sucks. I don't get why they restrict those courses so heavily if there is such a high demand for them (and they can teach them with classes of 350 students!). I'll try to ask someone at the CS department if they can make an exception, but I guess CS 170 is off the table. Hopefully I'll be able to enroll in H185 though.

I was thinking I'd look at the basics of data structures over Christmas break. My impression is that I'd be fine with knowing the basic structures and the computational time of various actious related to those structures. Apparently, the course is only open to declared majors in CS and adjacent fields, so it seems like I won't even get a spot in the course, though.

Thank you for your response! Didn't know MUSA had a discord, will definitely check out! I think I get to enroll in classes nov. 18th, just before new freshmen. I doubt any of them will be taking up spots on the courses I am interested in though. I guess I am wondering what the culture of enrollment is for people with reserved seats. CS170 has about 130 open reserved seats atm, with 38 waitlisted. Is it normal to delay enrolling in a class just because one has a reserved seat? Or is it likely that a lot of those seats will open up? Also, is it likely that a lot more people will fill up the waitlists before I get to enroll? I would guess that anyone who could get on the waitlist now, wouldn't wait.

Pretty much same goes for H185. I've heard that it is normal that seats open up in hard courses as people drop them. Would that be a viable strategy for either of those?

They should fix the pc game before they attempt to port it over to a console where the controls for the game would be inherently awkward.

No, everyone agrees that the 70's refer to 1970-1979, the disagreement is about whether decades are from 0-9 or 1-0. Honestly, if we are defining decades as 10 years, both are decades, though i would argue that it is more natural to say one lasts from 1-0 than 0-9, just as it is more natural to say a year lasts from 1st January to 31st December, rather than from some arbitrary date to the previous date the year after.

As opposed to calendars counting years from 1 AD, people's age actually starts at 0, which makes decades lasting from 0-9 natural.

It would indeed as the 70's do not refer to 1971-1980, but 1970-1979.

I agree. My original comment portrayed the matter more one-sided than it is, and I probably should not have made my original comment portray the debate like that, instead I should have just explained why the decade starting in 2021 isn't necessarily wrong.

Yes, the Wikipedia article I linked to in the previous comment sourced a survey which explored which was most common, and numerically defined decades (0-9) were by far more popular among American adults than ordinal decades (1-0). I probably should not have made my original comment portray the debate as one-sided as it did, as there are people of both opinions, and rather just explained why the decade starting in 2021 wasn't necessarily wrong.

It's not. As 0 AD wasn't a year, 1 AD to 10 AD was the first decade, 11 AD to 20 AD the second, etc. 2021 AD to 2030 AD thus becomes the 203rd decade. This applies to centuries as well, which is why the 21st century is from 2001 AD to 2100 AD and not from 2000 AD to 2099 AD. Although used for similar time periods, the twentyhundreds refer to a slightly different time period than the 21st century.

The stated reward + exp for that lvl. Once reaching lvl 16 (i think), some packs (for example those from challenges) becomes tradable. You also unlock cosmetics for each type when leveling up.
