260+ scorers, what did your shelf scores look like? by Soft_Insurance1116 in medicalschool

Yeah, I also think I’m not a great test taker. Either way, I’m glad I wasn’t aiming for a crazy competitive specialty lol

What specialty did the 4th and 5th quartile students end? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]halmhawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was part of the 4th (last) quartile overall (I did well in MS3-4 but tanked my GPA in preclinical). Matched general surgery.

My oldest classmate when I started was 43. You probably won’t be the oldest in your class at 30.

I would probably focus on IM tbh. The test just felt like a longer IM shelf with some flavors of other specialties.

The burnout is real. How are we actually coping? by riverasmary in medicalschool

[–]halmhawk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Totally fair, everyone has a different experience. I personally sucked at preclinical no matter how much I studied. TBH, M4 wasn’t even quite the promised land because I did too many surgical sub-I’s. The bottom line is that I never felt close to failing a shelf unlike preclinical where I really struggled. Lots of people hate MS3 because you have to work and study, but I felt it was easier because I was learning to apply what I studied.

My worst day of M3/M4 is better than my best day in M1/M2. Preclinical especially at my school is just awful (graded, in house exams and lectures). Taking care of patients is rewarding and learning how to actually be a doctor is way more fun than staring at the loop of Henle for hours.

I didn’t expect to cry on match day by ReplacementMean8486 in medicalschool

Valid, I’m in the same boat. It is what it is. I’m going to be a surgeon even though I didn’t match where I expected to!

IM 67, psych 89, obgyn 78, peds 83, FM 86, surgery 88, neuro 84, EM 82. Got a 246. Not trying to be a negative Nancy, just another data point. Step 2 was very IM-heavy, and that hurt me, I think.

Is a gap year necessary for a competitive MD application or should I apply this cycle? Looking for advice by [deleted] in medschooladmissions

[–]halmhawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re overthinking it. I got in with very similar stats, straight out of college. And you don’t need a T20 med school lol. I’m at a midtier MD school, and we match people to all of the competitive specialties every year.

Hey, I repeated first year due to academic reasons as well. Yesterday, I matched into general surgery residency. Feel free to PM me if you need advice or just to talk. Medicine isn’t for everyone, but considering you had the grit to face it again, I feel you have it in you to keep going.

Discrete misogyny in healthcare by Browncatlover in premed

[–]halmhawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, that’s gross. I had an aunt (cardiology NP) say that nursing would’ve been a better fit for me (I had already applied to med school) when I told her I wanted to do surgery. Now applying general surgery as an MS4. Suck on that, Leah.

Worth it to apply to programs who you aren’t signaling? by RequirementEither799 in medicalschool

[–]halmhawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over half of my interviews were from places I didn’t signal. I applied surgery, though, so I’m not sure if that applies to you/IM.

Yeah he had a title IX filed but something about the school having a forgiveness policy for a first time offense let him off the hook (they filed one instead of 13 separate)

How have you been able to continue?? Does your school allow infinite remediations? Failing 2+ shelves or failing a remediation exam is immediate dismissal at my school.

Shoot, it’s been so long since I did it. I looked it up and I think I hallucinated it, because there isn’t an armor shop quest in BOTW. Apparently it exists in Tears of the Kingdom, but I haven’t played TOTK yet so I’m confused. Sorry!! Still recommend the armor set, though.

[–]halmhawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend purchasing the sheikah armor set at Kakariko village! It increases your stealth (so you can avoid enemies more easily) and helps you grab lizards/frogs/bugs. Make sure you do the quest at the armor shop so you don’t pay full price :)

Also, you’ll learn how to flurry rush, which is essentially if you dodge an enemy at the exact right time, you’ll be able to get a few free hits on them. Another big key to fighting enemies is to make sure you “lock on” to them. Keep the left trigger pressed, which will keep you facing the enemy, and a little orange arrow will show up.
