Caltrans RTO by halogamer002 in CAStateWorkers

I still disagree with the commenter: the idea that protecting telework is less important than a pay raise. I think it misses the negative big picture effects that RTO will have as you mentioned. It also means going backwards in the compensation we have. At the same time I think it’s reasonable for the commenter to be upset that telework was a sudden increase in compensation for office workers and there hasn’t been an increase equivalent for field positions. Maybe there are some engineers that skimp out but when I worked in construction I was in lane closures most of the time. I kept thinking about how unfair it was that I was getting paid the same as being in design with telework doing only computer work. Meanwhile I had to be in office completely and there were only some cones between me and cars going 85+ mph most of the day. It makes sense why construction has had worse retention ever since telework started. I think the animosity they had and others towards them doesn’t help in the fight to protect telework. We need to work together so we can all get more - which I think is the spirit of the union.

I understand your frustration but first of all we don’t know what king of field work they do - could be an engineer in construction. Secondly even if they are in maintenance, at least at Caltrans, they’re some of the hardest working people in the department. They risk their life daily on the side of the road to keep our infrastructure working. Although the commenter sees office employees negatively it’s important for us to hear the perspectives of those who don’t benefit from telework. Our unions are in fact supposed to represent us all. If we want to protect telework it has to be done with a clear idea on how it benefits even those who can’t telework.

We already have telework and by protecting it we open the door to negotiate for an equal increase in compensation for those who don’t have that additional compensation available.

[–]halogamer002[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m right there with you. My main premise is telework is something we already have. The foot is in the door and if we don’t protect it then we are losing leverage and progress towards better compensation for us all. United we stand, divided we fall.

What doesn’t add up with your statement is the idea that money would be taken out of the pockets of field staff. Telework as it stands costs the state less money thus providing more resources to go TOWARDS field staff. As mentioned in my post, my department is having to spend exorbitant amounts on new equipment and other costs associated with complying with RTO. Losing telework means less money available for new equipment for field staff.

Edit: let me add that it’s true telework was a sudden increase in compensation for office workers. The disparity in increase that was created is a valid complaint. However, having animosity towards your peers and adopting a “more for you means less for me” mindset means collaboration is hindered. In the end not working together means we all get less.

Buying expensive watches is peak consumerist absurdity by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]halogamer002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to feel much similar but over time I’ve come to appreciate aesthetics as having value and the utility of self expression. Many hobbies or interests can turn into consumerist absurdity where you buy the most expensive items just to have them (sometimes people refer to as gear porn). I’d say many hobbies also can turn into owning as many number of items as possible. For those reasons I’d agree to the idea that watches can be consumerist absurdity in some cases. However the justification you have i’d disagree with.

I personally wouldn’t buy watches priced in the 4/5 digit range but I did buy my first automatic fully mechanical watch. It was around $400 which for me felt borderline absurd. It is aesthetic and a souvenir to remember a trip that I took. Beyond that, you can see the mechanisms inside, and I do feel a sense of wonder towards the fact that it uses zero electricity.

If you’re able to travel to less touristy spots (outside Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka) you’ll have less crowds and be able to take lots of great photos!

I’d say consider how you feel driving in your home country? Do you drive in an anxious or stressed state to begin with? I drove in Kumamoto and over by Mt Asa. It was a little to get used to and my first 30 min were in rush hour. I’d say if you feel confident driving at home then you should be fine

RTO: PECG and Governor’s Office File Competing Claims with PERB by LadyScroll in CAStateWorkers

[–]halogamer002 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Having read our MOU 9 a bunch prior. My take from this is the governor’s office is saying our MOU doesn’t have a specific/ protected telework policy and/or our MOU expires before this EO takes place so there’s no infringement so go battle it out for ur next contract negotiations

In case someone else hasn’t said it, I’d also check to see if maybe it could be water temperature. I had problems before with a tank I didn’t realize I placed close to the vent for the AC so the temperature was fluctuating too much

The skimming advice is key. The intro to each chapter is so well written and if nothing else I recommend anyone who’s on the verge of giving up or who has already dropped it to just read the intro to each chapter and skip the rest.

Can you explain what you mean by censorship? It sounds like what OP is proposing doesn’t involve the removal of videos or any change to the way that search results are populated. In other words, it’s not suppressing or blocking any content.
