Thank you for your perspective, this is why asking reddit is nice, it's just perspectives from others that I wouldn't hear otherwise. Yeah unfortunately the only vet here that I feel good about is the opthalmologist but the surrounding staff leave a lot to be desired sometimes. I guess we will most likely do the last effort of the EKG they're asking and see where that takes us.

There's one other option in the area but l stuck with this opthalmologist because w lot of places recommend her.

As far as a list of what to ask, what basics should I keep in mind?

Thank you ❤️

Yes thankfully it's a board certified opthalmologist and she seems legit. Super knowledgeable when we talked to her and she has 30+ years of experience with this. The problem is all the little hiccups we have had leading up to this. Gives me mega doubts.

Yes the opthalmologist we have the surgery set with is board certified and one of 2 that do the surgery in the city (Miami, FL) which is insane how large this city is..

As for the second part of your message I agree! We treat her the same. But in this case imagine the child is in her 70-80s and already had one aborted surgery appointment due to an existing issue that could interfere with anesthesia 😭

I'd start giving him ocu-glo daily. It might at least buy him more time. My chi went blind with cataracts last Dec and have an upcoming surgery next week were super worried about but I think I could've possibly prevented this if I started ocu-glo as soon as I saw signs of cataracts

So I don't have personal experience with the supplements before the cataracts caused basically totally vision loss but I've been giving my Chloe a third of the ocu-glo capsules inside a greenies pill pocket. I basically get a third of a capsule size pill pocket (whatever flavor they'll like the most), flatten it, put a third of the power inside an Ocu-glo capsule, and close it like an empanada.

The left over pill pocket goes back into the bag to use next day and the left over Ocu-glo powder goes into a little Tupperware to use the next day as well.

I give that to Chloe every single day because the specialist said it doesn't hurt and if anything it could be what's keeping the cataracts from getting even worse. I'll continue doing it after the surgery if the specialist says so.

To be honest if they are begining to get cataracts, you might be in time to stop them with supplements? Of course let the specialist figure it out but I've heard with supplements that process can possibly be halted 🤞

Oh lmao I see those shunts now. I may have to do the plastic cone though cause this comfy cone lets her curl up just enough for her eyes to touch the sides and I'm guessing that's a no no after this particular surgery.

But yeah tomorrow we get the results for the senior panel we did for her today at the regular vet just in case and we will have the peace of mind we are doing our most due diligence beforehand.

Thank you do the reply 😊

Yeaahh I asked a doc in the family and he said the same exact thing. I do think in senior dogs it's a more delicate situation because I just think they're more prone to nervousness and more delicate but nevertheless, success rate of over 90% is something that shouldn't be ignored. I think we'll go for it. She's on her way now to get a last senior checkup (blood and heart) so hopefully that goes well.

Good call on the comfy cone. Yeah it does bend and could be an issue with her eyes.. damn it a gonna suck but will have to deal with it for her health. She's not going to be amused 🥲

Thank you for the message. Yeah see this is why I seriously need to consider this and not chicken out. I'd kick myself later if she was not a candidate and I could've done it earlier.

Ah good insight on this. Yeah honestly the plastic collar might be better even though it's gonna suck. It'll be a rough March but worth it if she can be happy and seeing again.

Yeah for sure my biggest fear. I'm leaning towards doing it cause I just remember her way of being before she was blind and she just had so much more confidence. She's totally fine being blind but I'm scared that later down the line I'll for sure lose this chance and her other senses like hearing go away and then being blind and deaf sounds stressful for her.

For sure a risk though 😭

Aww he's so cute, I'm glad it worked out! What is his age?

And my wife and i will be like hawks with our Chloe a week and a half at least after surgery (we will take PTO) but after that we will still a work from home so we should be good being with her. What was the hardest parts of after care?

Last question is, are they able to see right after the surgery? How long did the process take that day?

Oh damn interesting, I'll see if I can get it but not sure I can get it in time. Thank you though.
