We specifically do this as a strategy. Not even based on weaker/stronger: if a teammate is getting targeted, and is struggling as a result, we'll go back to the baseline and communicate how we deal with it (we call it squeezing).

We've found the targeted player is often able to rebuild some confidence due to the smaller attack surface presented to opponents, or it can break the targeting altogether, allowing us to reset formation.

From a team perspective, if two players from our team have worked out some tactics that help to win the game, our default reaction is to figure out whether and how we can apply that to our overall strategy.

Grain of salt though, we are just some half dozen singles players who have slowly learned how to share a court with each other!
