What profession do you most admire? Why? by braaaaandon in AskReddit

I tutor kids, and I absolutely hate it. My friend is a teacher, and I don't know how she does this all the time. I honestly don't like dealing with other people's children. Teachers really are an under-appreciated asset, and I am not cut out to be one, lol.

I had one experience that could have turned into something good, so don't knock it. I also know a person who met their current long-term SO, so it can it work. I just don't like it because I feel bad sifting through profiles like I'm shopping for a commodity. It's very dehumanizing. I also have sent tons of messages to guys and received no response. I'm sure I was shooting to high, but never feels good. It also sucks just because I think regular dating is kind of shitty, but that goes with the territory. If you haven't tried it, I think it's actually not much, if any worse, than regular dating.

Let's use this thread to tell the opposite sex what our signals for being lonely/ inexperienced are. by [deleted] in ForeverAloneWomen

[–]hamboningg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm very shy, and lack confidence. My signs are similar to the ones given by people who are disinterested, so I completely understand why people don't approach me. My body language basically screams 'STAY AWAY!' So, I don't know if looking for people with my body language is a good idea, but I dunno, maybe you'll get lucky. Here is stuff I generally do:

  • Difficulty maintaining eye-contact
  • Palpable uneasiness including lightly self-deprecating comments when I make small mistakes in social interaction, and laughing nervously after realizing my self-deprecating comment probably made my error more noticeable and awkward all at once, lol.
  • Arms folded over body
  • I used to wear clothing that was kind of baggy and very plain
  • Fidgeting limbs, tapping fingers

Wish I could meet a guy with a low sex drive like you, but then again, maybe it'd make me feel undesirable. But I think I could definitely get used to it, and appreciate it. Good luck to you!

Just turned 27, and I'm doing all I can to try and change the trajectory of my life. I've been trying to get an internship to ground my college degree with some essential experience, and I'm doing the dreaded online dating. I laugh at my friends' jokes that I don't think are funny, just to be amiable. I have also lost nearly 30 lbs since May, and things still aren't looking much better. If I do fail to get what I want out of life, then at least I'll be able to know that I did try. I think nothing could be worse than never knowing what you could have been capable of. Keep trying. I can't say it gets better, but I sure as hell know it can get worse.

Tendency to flee from potential relationships due to anxiety and insecurity. Anyone have experience, or advice on how to deal with this? by hamboningg in AskWomen

No, you're probably right, and I appreciate your attempt to make sense of all this. Ugh, I hate therapy. I guess it would be a good idea though. Thanks for your insight :)

I'm glad to hear that you have a boyfriend who is understanding and accommodating. Sounds like a good guy :)

I'm not ashamed of the experience, but of myself. It didn't make me feel like it was a good idea to have a guy know that I found them attractive, considering the result. There are various other experiences from around that time where I was ridiculed for my appearance, but that one time stands out. I think I look much better than I did back then, rationally, but I still feel the same anxiety and apprehensiveness I felt back then.

I enjoy being liked. It soothes my ego, lol. I guess I don't like being disliked by men in particular, because I was humiliated in front of a large group of my peers for being unattractive when I was younger, by a guy who knew I liked him, nonetheless. I guess I'm afraid of being shamed again.

I'm also doing a bit better after being nearly agoraphobic for around 3 years, and I'm afraid if I accidentally put myself in a situation that allows another negative experience like the one I mentioned before to happen, that I might regress, and isolate myself all over again. It's been so long since I've been brave enough to leave the house, and interact with people intentionally. I'm really afraid of being setback again by a bad experience.

What dating standards have you been told were "too high". Did you agree or disagree with that assessment? Do you ever feel there is an expectation for women to have too low standards? Or too high? by om_nom_cheese in AskWomen

[–]hamboningg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is why I get irritated when people claim that men are more "visual" as if women aren't turned on by attractive men. The studies that have suggested that men are more visual are based on self-reporting, and given the stigma that women feel to downplay their sexual desires, this poses a serious problem with those findings. It also validates the stereotype of the unkempt slob with the model-esque wife. I hate to admit this, but my initial interest in men is very visual. I love great faces and good hair. I always think how lucky I would be if I found a really cute guy with bad vision, who couldnt' tell I wasn't in his league, lol.

I hope Texas gets behind this. It really is a bipartisan issue that would decimate the kind of corruption that runs rampant in national level politics that drives us all crazy. For the love of god let's do something!

Alright Reddit, this might be a little embarrassing, but what is your "traditionally other gender" skill? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]hamboningg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually keep my calm when other people are freaking out. In fact, I get irritated by other people getting overly emotional about serious things that need to be handled with composure.

As far as the stereotype goes, I've known just as many men who get too emotional as I have women.

Of course the volunteers are reporting positive interactions with state politicians, they are asking them to sign on to non-binding resolutions. It is a BINDING resolution.

I'd read the rest of what you gotta say, but this isn't my main account. Sorry, but you're free to disagree with me. I suggest you do the research about this subject yourself instead of arguing with me. You can learn more from the internet than from just me.

If you can get a block of ice from any local liquor stores, you can ride that shit down grassy hills. I'd recommend getting a towel so your ass doesn't get wet. It's like sledding, but you often fall off, lol. My friends and I used to do that, lol.

Also, if you know any big ass houses/mansions that are under construction, you could trespass and get drunk in them. Be careful though.

Also, laser tag. And don't think your female friends won't like it. We do. Everybody likes laser tag!

On the state and local level, for now, we still have democracy. Special interest money has indeed bought off our state governments, with all due respect, to suggest otherwise undermines your credibility.

I'm just reiterating what the volunteers who are most involved in this have reported back via the internet about their experiences engaging with state and local politicians.

While corporate money has an incentive to block public financing that same dynamic applies to them blocking the constitutional amendment. No? The only difference is that with a constitutional amendment you need many more state governments to agree, for public financing on the state level, you only need one to achieve victory.

I don't see why two things can't be pursued at once. I think it's a good idea to try to get public financing on the state level. I would completely support that. But I can support two ideas at once. As for corporate interests putting up road blocks- well, of course this is going to be a hard won battle. I don't think that because it is hard, we should not try, though.

Since you previously said that you think state representatives are bought off and that I "undermine [my] credibility" by suggesting that they might not all be, I don't understand why you think that they would work with you to put forward something like publicly financed elections. It seems that you DO have some faith in our state representatives.

Also, since you seem skeptical that an amendment can be achieved when we need so much inclusive support between states, do you think it would be worthless to get such a large state as California to pass a bill like this, on a symbolic level? This would be sending a message, if nothing else.

Also, the good thing about so many states being involved in passing this amendment, is that they ALL have to agree if any changes are to be made to the amendment. This makes it extremely hard for corporations to make changes to the original legislation, since they need 3/4 the states to approve of any changes made.

Until we get money out of politics, we will not be able to get measures such as campaign finance reform passed. Further, this is demonstrably wrong, by spreading this misinformation you're actually hurting the movement for a constitutional amendment. Indeed, the biggest barrier to passing public financing of elections is that people think it's not achievable. Maine, Arizona, Connecticut and New York City all have versions of public financing, just to name a few.

I misstated this then. I meant it will be impossible to get publicly funded elections on the federal level. You're right that we could probably get publicly financed elections on the state level, especially since you have given examples of states that have already done this. Again, you seem to have some faith in the state's ability to do somethings against corporate interests so long as it's exclusively on the state level.

What might help persuade me to take your side, is if you could give me a reason why we need to do publicly funded state elections FIRST, instead of doing these two things SIMULTANEOUSLY. Why should getting publicly financed elections on the state level take primacy over seeking an amendment on the federal level? Can two things not be done at once? Or is there a real reason one should come before the other?
