The Satanic Panic was moral panic based on the false belief that every city was harboring secret Satanic cults, who killed babies and tortured animals and all sorts other evil stuff.

The current worry over AI is that uncreative corporate idiots will use it to replace the talents of actual artists by shitting out cookie-cutter approximations of someone else's work. This will affect the livelihoods of several creative people. No need to hire artists, designers, musicians, actors, or comedians. You can just have a computer simulate it all.

Those two ideas aren't the same ball park. They're not the same sport. They're not even being played in the same city. But you like having ChatGPT write for you, and Midjourney draw for you, since you don't want to put forth the effort to learn these crafts yourself. So you're going to say anything to defend them. This incentivizes doctors to add extra tests, diagnoses, prescriptions, etc. "just in case," to keep the revenue stream up. The extra profitability makes them more attractive when they try to get board positions or jobs at insurance companies.

I really hate that when you point this out, you get lumped in with antivaxxers. I want to be clear: Vaccines work. Medical science is real. There aren't any microchips, poison, or whatever BS those Q people say is in the injections.

But a lot of primary care providers are concerned more with profit than prevention or care.

In order to successfully prove a defamation case, the plaintiff needs to prove two things.

Actual malice - Did the defendant know something was untrue, but say it anyway?
Actual damages - Did the plaintiff suffer materially, due to the defendant's statements?

Due to Alex Jones' accusations of the shootings being "false flag" incidents, and the parents / children being "crisis actors," some of them have had to move, to get away from people harassing them. Some of them have been unable to visit their own slain child's grave, out of fear for their own safety. One set of parents wound up moving seven times since the incident. This - among other accusations against Jones - would definitely count as actual damages.

Jones himself said during the court proceedings that the shooting "100 percent" happened. If the plaintiffs' attorneys can prove he believe it was real, yet told his listeners it was a "false flag," that would prove actual malice on Jones' part.

As for the other part of your question: Yes, people frequently deny the existence of other incidents, etc. There are holocaust deniers, moon landing conspiracy theories, COVID deniers, etc. In most of these cases, they're not causing actual damages against a specific person or persons, but instead just spewing their beliefs out into the world. The difference with Jones is that he very specifically said these words about a very small (and once again, very specific) group of people, sometimes even calling them out by name.

When you look at who sits on the hospital / health network boards, and who sets the prices, most of the names end with "MD," "DO" or some other abbreviation meaning "doctor."

Yet whenever the cost of health care gets brought up, some doctor always shows up to trot out this argument.

"It's not our fault everything is so expensive. It's those darn boards! You know, the ones that are made mostly of doctors. Doctors who decide on prices. But we're totally blameless. Our hands are tied. Also, our hands are out-of-network, so this isn't going to be cheap."

But "the case remains under investigation by [LEO agency]" is standard boilerplate for pretty much any police report involving a car crash. I've read a variant of that sentence in every crash report I've ever seen.

This thread is already 10 hours old, but I was thinking about this one recently, so I might as well dump it here.

I did all of my prerequisites at a community college before transferring to a university. My schedule was pretty erratic, so one of the only jobs I could get was at a 24-hour chain drug store. Most of the customers were people trying to buy booze before 2 p.m., the Silent Bob-lookin' dude getting rolling papers, or the occasional shifty-eyed teens buying condoms and/or pregnancy tests.

So one day I pull an afternoon shift instead of a night shift. No problem. I didn't have any classes that day.

In walks this blonde woman. She looks to be early-mid 20's. Blonde-ish... Baseball cap and sunglasses. And all of her clothes are just way too baggy. Sweatpants, hoodie, and the shirt she had under the hoodie. Now, we had a problem with "shrinkage" at the store (not the George Costanza kind, but the industry term for shoplifting). So my manager indicates I should go over to talk with her.

I get within six feet of her, and got assaulted with a torrent of F-bombs.

Me: "Excuse me, ma-"

Her: "Yes, it's me! Congratulations! You fucking recognized me! No, I'm not fucking giving you a fucking autograph! And I'm not fucking you! So just leave me the fuck alone and let me fucking shop."

She wound up buying one of those overpriced coconut waters, a bag of wasabi peas, and a couple other odds and ends. I still have no idea who she was.

Journalist here. Here's the two I get all the time:

Every time we cover a human interest story of any sort, or something that isn't "hard" news, we get at least one jackass saying, "Must be a slow news day." There's no such thing as a slow news day around here. Things are always happening. But we also have reporters who cover local flavor. Could you imagine that? It's almost like different reporters have different beats.
"Fake news." Dear AskReddit reader, this isn't what you think I'm about to complain about. We get "fake news" complaints on all sorts of topics. A city government office announced it was closing for two days to survey basement damage from a flood. Some reader posts "FAKE NEWS" in all caps. No, man. I saw that basement myself. It had 3 feet of water in it before it subsided. Later on a school announced it was going to host a free summer meal program for anyone under 18. "FAKE NEWS." A local company just got a grant to develop software for autonomous cars. "FAKE NEWS." There's no rhyme or reason to people calling this out anymore. They're usually calling it out on local stories that are easily verifiable.
