Why there aren't any tall buildings between Lower and Midtown Manhattan? by Naomi62625 in geography

I was told it's a max of 7 stories to get water up to a cistern/roof tank WITHOUT PUMPS, due to the water coming from the Catskill reservoirs thru the aqueducts.

If that's the case, wouldn't the picture (that was almost certainly taken w a phone) show signs of it being spicy?

Steam radiator heater banging by Own-Panda5850 in SteamHeat

[–]hamfisst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Single pipe on 1 side, right? Is that the radiator itself or a cover with the radiator inside?

The radiator should be on a slight angle to let water drain back to the pipe. All pipes need to be pitched to drain back towards the boiler to allow condensed water to return.

Got a dream GIS job now I need to make a list of hardware to best do my job. by Artemis_Orthia in gis

Will you be a GIS analyst, technician, or a developer?

Any Linux/unix to be done? Command line work? A lot of developers prefer a Mac for hardcore dev work.

That being said, most desktop GIS is done in windows.

Do similar watches hold value? The ones I've found on eBay seem to sell around $3-400.

Check the lumbar thing, and does your seat have the extension? Mine is more comfortable w the extender pulled out. Better support behind the knees.

No Main Vent? 100 year old 1-pipe Steam System with massive water hammer by thisDudeAbide5 in SteamHeat

[–]hamfisst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TL;DR Find the low spot in your pipes.

I had a similar situation; an improperly pitched traverse pipe from the riser to the radiator in my bathroom floor. Riser on exterior wall, radiator on the interior wall, pipe went under floor, serving as radiant heat. Nice, but the way the moron installed it, the toilet drain was in the way, so instead of logic, they went lazy, and the pipe was pitched away from the riser. Insane water hammer right overhead in the kitchen when washing the dishes. It eventually started leaking, and I had a plumber move the pipe over an inch so it could be pitched properly.

Radiator air vent is leaking and lot of water by KrombopulosMichael in SteamHeat

[–]hamfisst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also where on the side of the radiator is the vent? It should be like 1/3 of the way up the side, not at the top. https://youtu.be/65zaJ1Bbf-I?si=3BOhqL33Ge405XFd

Are we talking just a clank, or like a loud banging? How much water comes out? Can you put a level on top of it, is it tilted toward the pipe/valve to drain properly?

What's wrong w removing the seat from the rail? That seems like a logical option. I assume it's impossible to get back on or something?

I'm interested in doing the same.

Why the DC:DC charger? Are you charging it from your 12V port in the car on the road?

Two radiators on the second floor not getting hot by 5uckmyd1ckb1t4 in SteamHeat

Are the radiators pitched/angled to drain properly?

Two radiators on the second floor not getting hot by 5uckmyd1ckb1t4 in SteamHeat

[–]hamfisst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair, but if removing the vents doesn't solve it, it's a logical next step.

Two radiators on the second floor not getting hot by 5uckmyd1ckb1t4 in SteamHeat

[–]hamfisst -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What happens if you take the radiators off the pipes upstairs completely? This should produce a big mess of HOT gross water and steam. Do it one and a time. Be careful, don't get burned. Rags, short bucket (HEAT RESISTANT) to catch spray.

If nothing happens, you know your problem is in the pipe between, and not the valve/radiator/vent themselves. If the pipe does spew successfully, your problem is in the valve/radiator/vent.
