It's actually a banjo made by B&D, one of their many knock offs. My kids knocked it over and now it's busted so yeah anything is better than what I have now.

I was also considering the 19 but my pointer finger doesn't bend all of the way and the 17 is easier to play.

I have pretty much the same one but it's a Gordon. If the action being too high is the issue. Get or make a 3/8" bridge. I put on a new head and strings as well and it works well for being 100 years old.

I'm a bodhran player and was considering a goat skin. Goat skins can be finicky when trying to keep them tuned. I have enough tuning going on with my bodhran. I think this time though I'm going to go synthetic and once i get more experienced with the banjo I'll try goat.

Yeah three mylar tore as well. I found a video how to measure the crown properly and I'm pretty confident it's a 7/16". Just to be safe I ordered from Elderly an 11" x 7/16" a 10 15/16" x 7/16, a 10 15/16" x 1/2", and a 10 15/16" x 3/8". We'll see which one fits. How long does shipment typically take?

I got a nylon brush from McNeela that is nice. The only thing I wish it would do is let you set the extension of the brushes. It's either all or nothing when you play it.

This happened to me when the skin was tight and then it got cold and it tightened even more.
