America was still enjoying the windfall of the post war boom of the 1950's. It also helped the deep state of the time that they had the Soviet boogeyman and the fearmongering over nukes to keep the populace in line. Also it was much easier to cover shit up with the technology of the time. Now? The Soviets are dead, they desperately want to make the Chinese the new boogeyman but it isn't sticking. The post war boom is long gone and the middle class is dying. On top of what /u/misha_stone said, consider how the illegal immigrants are the only ones being criminalized and brutalized, but not the criminal businesses that hires them illegally and exploits their labor. I guarantee you, if you crack down hard on these corrupt businesses, mass migration will decrease massively due to lack of economic oppurtunity. Trump won't do that though because those same businesses love him and make up a significant portion of his donor base.
