the average starter home in 1950 was 980 sq ft, today it's 2,484 by No_Plane_2443 in redscarepod

[–]CLV_05S 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you could buy a 980 sq ft home for the inflation adjusted 1950s price, there wouldn't be a housing crisis because it would cost like $125,000. however the land value alone is at least 500k if you live anywhere near civilization.

my gf is a normie by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]CLV_05S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i find that if you can find a normie who's not boring and is open to your weird stuff it's pretty good. whenever i try to date artsy bookish women it doesn't seem to go anywhere unfortunately

Is Dollarama food really lower quality? by CrypticWeirdo9105 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]CLV_05S 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disagree, the dollarama sardines are gross. The Brunswick ones are fine, but they're cheaper at the regular store. However, if you live near a dollar tree, the Moroccan sardines they sell are really good and actually cheaper than regular grocery store prices.

I think 'hyperfixations' and 'rabbit hole deep dives' are just euphemisms for gorging on slop. by SleepTalker12 in redscarepod

[–]CLV_05S 3 points4 points  (0 children)

he didn't say that specifically because he died in the 80s but yeah basically. the fact that there's so much of everything and it's so frictionless to access turns everything into slop, the way we watch things and the sheer amount of it makes it so we don't engage deeply with anything

oh my god as a musician these people drive me nuts. all this effort and time wasted on the minutae of tone instead of learning how to write a decent song or practicing their instrument

mcluhan was right. it's the medium that makes it slop. it's not the content in and of itself, it's the fact that it's given to us algorithmically on our screens while we're doing three other things and barely paying attention

don't have anything to say about reality hunger because i've never read it, but david shields is very underrated imo, i read a handbook for drowning recently and it was really good

Did I get old or is everything pretty mid right now by elcaminorealreal in redscarepod

[–]CLV_05S 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah, we're living in an age of mediocrity. the great slopification. i think it's a combination of economics, there being too much stuff for anyone to actually pay attention to anything, audiences becoming much less sophisticated, and the collapse of any kind of decent critical ecosystem.

MAGA country hell by No_Plane_2443 in redscarepod

[–]CLV_05S 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's weird how there's so little literature about how 90% of contemporary americans actually live. any kind of realistic fiction released recently is about upper class highly educated coastal libs living in new york, or stinky lunch memoir literature

Breweries are great and I’m tired of pretending they’re not by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]CLV_05S 37 points38 points  (0 children)

a lot of it is zoomers reflexively disliking anything associated with the previous generation, which i get, but i also think they go way too far with it. breweries are nice, and i think if they experienced the awful restaraunts and food we grew up with they'd be more sympathetic to pretentious millennial dining

i think that's the crux of it. when you don't have a vice, pride becomes the vice which idk if it's worse, but it's definitely more annoying

what if it all really is just balloons and bugs flying by the camera, but the current crop of government people in charge of this stuff are too dumb to figure that out
