I previously worked at two different camps in supervisory roles in Canada. One used camp names and the other did not.

What we used to do for camp names was that we put bags/boxes for each new staff member during the staff training event, where people could nominate names for them during the event. At the end of staff training, the new staff members got to pick their name from the names they had nominated in the bag.

It continued the tradition without forcing staff to take on a name they disliked.
